Do we ever get to see "Private" collections?
Are ther any images of this part-Picasso on the web?

On the topic of paintings,
Would charcoal and graphite be a painting?

Archibald winner heads to court
A Sydney artist will lodge a court challenge arguing the Archibald-winning
portrait of actor David Gulpilil was not a painting and was therefore ineligible for the prize.
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/03/26/1079939832379.html?from=storyrhs
Kings Cross artist Tony Johansen will state in his claim to the
NSW Supreme Court that the Gulpilil portrait, by Sydney artist Craig Ruddy,
should be disqualified and the $35,000 prize re-awarded.

Charcoal and graphite predominated in the portrait,
which had all the hallmarks of a drawing, Mr Johansen
said before lodging his claim.

"It's a stunning work of art. We're not questioning its quality," Mr Johansen said.

"What we're saying is since it's a drawing,
it's ineligible under the terms of the Archibald bequest."

There was once on my site, but I have taken it down for the moment. My
whole Picasso-site will be reloaded later, including this stamp and an FDC.

Hardly, rather a drawing. But then again, some of Georgia O'Keeffe's early
works in charcoal and graphite are classified as paintings.

For those interested in Picasso's life and work as shown on stamps, I have
reloaded my Picasso-pages

http://www.arthistos02.frac.dk/picasso-intro.htm

The stamp image Rodney is inquiring about is included in the surrealistic
period.

Oh! ...........course flax linen,
thanks, I hadn't realised that.

| The winning art of the contest must be painted with pigment made from
| sour grapes. The runner-up painting must be done with Indian Yellow
| which is derived from urine of cows that had been fed mango leaves and
| sprayed on course flax linen. Third place goes to finger painting with
| burnt buffalo meat on a rock wall. Last place goes to the one made
| with the pigment arsenic and it's okay if it is unfinished.

Well, this will be an interesting bunfight.
I wonder if those that splash paint on canvas via a tin
will be considered paintings, after all the paint has not
been applied via a brush?
Curious people, these painters.

Wow!
That's a keeper.
I always celebrate eccentricity in art,
(The ear painting Van Gough, and Caravaggio's Dwarf and Dog etc)
but when it went off on the modern tangent, as explained,
the eccentricity left me flat, a bit like modern fireworks displays,
I don't see why people bother.
BTW I hope you one day see the Aust Gulpilil Drawing/painting,
It is IMHO really stunning.

| quote.
| Visual art is a leading indicator of the way in which society is moving, and
| one of the most obvious and visible signs that sanity has lost its way.
| Blank white canvases; paint haphazardly thrown onto a canvas and called
| art -- these are most often representative of "modern art."
|
| One of the greatest frauds of modern times is the idea that art should be
| difficult to understand, and that a sign of sophistication and intelligence
| is understanding what is incomprehensible to the uninitiated. The result is
| a farce: those who wish to appear sophisticated pretend to see meaning where
| there is none.
|
| Art has a definite purpose: to show what people can and should be. The best
| art -- be it literature, visual art, or music -- inspires us to be our best.
| Art is a way of integrating our values; saying in one picture what it would
| take 1,000 words to explain. In this sense, the best art affects us in an
| immediate and emotionally captivating way. Great art reaffirms our most
| important values; mediocre art confuses; bad art degrades us. The best art
| lifts us up, the worst art shows contempt for the idea that there is any
| "up."
