Would the 1917 Walking Liberty 50 with obverse mintmark generally be
considered as a coin to be included in a 20th century type set? Do type set
albums include a space for it? I presume that Jefferson nickels with a
large mint mark above Monticello would have been included even if they
weren't a different composition. I know. We should include whatever
pleases us. But I cringe at the thought of having to budget for a nice BU
1917 WL with the obverse MM if most type set collectors don't consider it a
variety to include.

You already know it's up to you. So, here's what coincollector.org thinks:

http://coincollector.org/coincollecting20cent.html (No)

Coin Link:

http://www.coinlink.com/CoinGuide/us-type-coins/ (No)

PCGS:

http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/SetComposition.aspx?c=215 (major types, No)
http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/SetComposition.aspx?c=155 (with type
variations, No)

I do not know if albums allocate a space for it.

It would appear as if mint mark placement doesn't count. Would I include
both in mine? You betcha'.

A long time midwesterner transplanted to Washington state. Still miss those
corn fields.

I know of no type album that calls for a second walking half or any other
mintmark migration.

The 1969 edition of the Library of Coins type album, though, calls for three
wheat ear Lincolns in terms of designer's initials: 1909 VDB, 1909-1917
without VDB, and 1918-1958 VDB on truncation.
