The community should be aware that several local coin
dealers have been approached by a white male
attempting to sell them old coins that are
counterfeit. This male sold one dealer eight coins
for $1,700. Those coins were sent in to verify that
they were authentic, and all of the coins came back
as not genuine. The coins all look authentic, and it
is difficult to determine they are phony unless they
are sent in to be graded and authenticated.
Anyone with information about these fake coins or
any other crime is asked to call Marathon County
Crimestoppers at 800-559-4203. Callers can remain
anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
