Nice Stuff

If it's all so nice, why would you want to part with it? I've got to admit,
though, I've always wondered how easier life could be with a hydraumatic
watch.

I really wonder about all this recent wristwatch business. The
foreigners who make these - what don't they understand??? Every
computer, cell phone, automobile, wall and public place have clocks
nowadays. Clocks are everywhere. Why wear a wristwatch and have the
strap make your blood pressure go up???

My last wrist watch purchase was before 1992, I'll say that.

Well, I love fine watches. I can't afford even the lower end of the good
stuff, such as an Omega, but I do have an assortment ranging from nice dress
watches to well-made utilitarian timepieces. I regard them with the same
fondness that I have for certain coins in my possession.

I don't carry my cell phone except when I leave the house. There is a clock
in every room in my house because I'd rather be a slave to time than to the
constant interruptions of cell phones and their monstrous mutant offspring,
the so-called smart phones. My kids are tethered to theirs like a dog on a
short leash whose master constantly yanks them around. I can't have a
10-minute conversation with any of them without their masters booping for
their attention.

I know, there's a middle ground to be had here, but it's a generational
thing. I was hooked when the first electronic watches came out in the
1960s. The LED watches were like something out of science fiction. In high
school, one guy had one of the first highly accurate crystal-regulated
watches on the market. He carefully timed it to our class schedule, and one
day he got up and started to walk out of the classroom. Two seconds later,
the teacher asked "Where do you think you're going?" Two seconds after that,
the bell ending the class period sounded, leaving the teacher with nothing
he could do except scowl at the departing student. We all marveled at his
chutzpah. The cheap Timex watches we wore weren't nearly accurate enough
for the timing to pull that off.

I inherited an old Patek Philippe wristwatch from my father's dad.
It's got an 18K gold case and (currently) an alligator strap.
It's too nice to wear day-to-day, so I only trot it out on special occasions.
My daily watch is a digital Timex I got at Walmart for 10 bucks.
Keeps perfect time and has a nice alarm function, among several other features.

I still wear the same gadget-filled G-Shock that I found useful when I was
working. It sticks up about an inch from my wrist; I can't read the small
print around the dial anymore and I've forgotten how to use most of its
features. But like with most of my coins, I just can't bear to part with
it.
