I recently purchased a nice medal from Sydney, Australia ...

http://www.kenbarr.com/09/sydneyaust.jpg

which commemorates "The Big Store" (Marcus Clark & Co. Ltd.)
and the Sydney Harbour Bridge (Opened 1932). Does anyone
down there know if Marcus Clark & Co. Ltd. is still operating
a store there, and if not, when it closed? Any info would
be greatly appreciated ... TIA!

From the "Guide to Australian Business Records"
<http://www.archivists.org.au/busrec/biogs/ABE0106b.htm>:

Marcus Clarke and Company Limited was incorporated in NSW on 16 October
1902 to take over the drapery and general merchandise business founded
by Henry Marcus Clark in 1883. In 1926 the company took over the
established retail business of Craig Williamson Pty Ltd and in 1927
Miller Anderson Ltd. In 1966 the company was take over by Waltons
Limited and changed its name to Waltons Stores Limited. In 1987 (?) it
formed part of a sale to Venture Stores (Retailers) Pty Ltd (Venture
Stores Group).

Yep, saw that when I googled "Marcus Clark Sydney" ...
but is Marcus Clark & Co. Ltd. the same as Marcus Clarke
& Co. Ltd.?? I was able to find references to Marcus Clark
the author, Marcus Clark the photographer, Marcus Clark the
politician and Marcus Clark Street in Sydney, but nothing
explicitly about Marcus Clark (sans the "e") & Co. Ltd. ...

I think what you are telling me is that you are perfectly capable of
doing your own internet searches. :)

Nonetheless, since I did poke around a bit...

Given the grammatical error, "the company was take over", and the
founder's name spelled as "Clark", I assumed that the "Clarke" spelling
was also a typing error.

In the Google list you probably also saw a link to a PDF version of an
paper on department stores at the turn of the century
(http://130.195.95.71:8081/WWW/ANZMAC2001/anzmac/
AUTHORS/pdfs/Merrilees2.pdf).
This paper makes many references to the Marcus Clark department store
chain (branches, there). Perhaps some of their references might be
available to you.

Look also at the link entitled "Manufacturers". It lists a brand of
bicycle as being sold at the Marcus Clark department stores, and shows
a 1932 example.

The company, Marcus Clark & Company, still existed as of 1952, as there
is a legal case cited with that date: "Marcus Clark & Co. Ltd. v. The
Commonwealth and Others", at
<http://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/disp.pl/au/cases/cth/high_ct/87clr177.
html?query=title+%28+%22+1952+87+clr+177%22+%29>

If the bit I originally quoted is referencing the correct Marcus Clark
& Company, it was taken over and renamed Waltons Stores, which itself
went defunct sometime after 1988. (There are about a zillion references
to "Waltons Stores v. Maher" from 1988, a major reference in Aussie
contract case law, and several other references to the "now defunct
Waltons Stores Limited."

Sorry, shudda mentioned that I'd already googled without much
success ...

My bad, *that* I didn't notice ... I thought it was an Official
Government Listing which had already been vetted for speeling
errers ...

Yep, got that too, which appears to limit the medal to the
1932 - 1988 timeframe, still a little too wide for my tastes.
I'm hoping that "The Big Store" pictured on the medal closed
before the renaming, or that the medal was issued for a specific
occasion, and that somebody Out There remembers when ...

The commemorative medal was issued by the well known and highly regarded Marcus Clark & Company when the harbour bridge opened in 1932. I (aged 75) have had one for many years (inherited from my father who also had it for many years). The pictured store was built in 1906 and was the tallest building in Sydney at the time.
