Anyone out there ever heard of such a coin? I ask because I've seen one and
can't seem to learn anything about it

Do you mean silvery looking? Or actual Silver??

I know of no silver cents in US history. And I am infallible.

No I'm not. But I've never heard of a silver cent. All cents except for a
few errors in 1943 were a silvery-looking zinc-coated steel, perhaps that's
what you've got...?

All 1987 cents are copper plated zinc. Your cent is missing the copper
layer. It was either misplated at the mint, or someone removed the
copper layer.

Have to weigh it to be sure and it is unlikely IMNSHO. Mos likely thing is -
somebody dropped it in vinegar or similar low pH for awhile.

Sounds like a cent missing the copper coating. Not sure about the "gift box" above the date?

I also have one. It is attached to a business card sized card stock with a birthday poem. The bottom states: Product of Thomas SOS Enterprises. Cannot find anything online to refer to regarding this penny.

For it to be silver it would have to be a cent struck on a dime planchet meant for a 90% silver proof set. It could could be a clad dime planchet, but would be flatter and thinner cuz the dime is smaller, it also would likely be off center. Most likely the copper plating was removed or not applied well. Not to be a nit picker but the mint has never struck pennies.

A message the Mint's marketing department apparently failed to get.
