Men collect for the same reasons. When I was about five years of age,
I became intrigued with coins, their dates, the fact that some old
forgotten cents on my grandfather's bureau could still look new after
ten or fifteen years. I too, have had a fondness for beautiful
artwork. Too bad that it no longer exists to any measurable degree in
American coins. And for those who would disagree, put down your
flametorches. This isn't just an opinion, it's a fact. A rather sad
one at that. Anybody who would extol the artistic virtues of today's
coins would probably defend the mundane appearance of the new state
quarters, arguably the homeliest coins in years. Face it folks,
today's coins are ugly. The beauty of coins IS one reason to collect,
and one reason why I no longer do. There are no Victory nickles, no
Indian Head cents, no beautiful gold coins, no Standing Liberty
Halves, no nothing!! The last beautiful coins, the Washington
quarters, the Jefferson nickles, the pre-1959 Lincoln cents, all
replaced something MORE beautiful......so you can say that it is
a trend. It is just going from fair to poor. Too bad, too! And the
irony? Most people don't even know that it is happening, or would
argue against the fact that it is. Sigh!

No flames intended, you have an absolute right to your opinion. Does anything
below give you cause to rethink some conclusions?
There never were US Victory nickels, the V is the Roman numeral for cents.
(That was Canada with the Victory 5 cents.) Liberty ("V") nickels are not
terribly beautiful, but they certainly were an improvement over the shield
nickel.
no
>Indian Head cents, no beautiful gold coins,
I suppose you haven't seen US gold eagles? How about gold commemmoratives? Our
cents are a bore, I will admit, however after 91 years, anything would be
stale. ;)
no Standing Liberty
>Halves,
Haven't seen an SAE? They are the spitting image.
> no nothing!!
There are platinum coins, a bimetal, silver commems etc. and what about Brass
Bux? no nothing? C'mon... go to the mint's website and see what's new. Don't
like new? There's plenty of old coins around. Go to eBay. ;)
{snip}
Mundane? Hmmm, IMO the Deleware quarter is the best looking US coin since the
Kennedy Half. IMO only the Pennsylvania is close to as butt ugly as a Franklin
and Barber coinage wasn't a heckuva lot more imaginative. All the seated stuff
looks the same as well. The early stuff, flowing hair and bust coinage is
interesting, but now is a GREAT time to be a collector.
If not US coins, try Canada, they have some interesting new designs.... [Ohhh,
that Queen is such a babe!] :^)
Sorta OT:
I want to go on record: I never mount*ed any coin, and I am against the guys
that do it. ;)
Bigg Fredd prolly has some pictures of coins being mount*ed going up FA at
eBay. :^)
Some guys want all different types of coins; others are faithful and have
lov*ed only one coin. [I am still saving myself for the right coin.]
It is nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice. I do wish you
well. :-)
Ummm, no, wait.... read it: V is the Roman numeral for five.... As Seated
Liberty (Steve Preston) pointed out:
It is nice to be important, but more important not to post in the early
morning. :)

Congratulations, Roxanne! May I ask what the date is? (My wife and I
were married in May, too, the 28th to be exact.)
