I found this coin and cannot identify it. It may be a commemorative?
One side bears the inscription "THE DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY 1789"
around the edge with a shield in the center. The shield bears a set of
scales at the top; an inverted V shaped bar across the center with 13
stars in it; and a key at the bottom.
The other side bears the inscription "UNITED STATES BULLION DEPOSITORY
FORT KNOX KENTUCKY" around the edge with an image of a building (Fort
Knox or original Treasury building?) in the center.
The coin is approximately half dollar size, apparently copper or bronze
with smooth edge. The shield side in in excellent condition bearing
virtually no wear and slight corrosion. The other side is in very good
condition but slightly more corroded. The coin was buried about 4" in the
ground and - based on owners occupancy of the property - was there for at
least 16 years. Therefore it is not likely a 1989 commemorative.
Please reply with any information of origin or value or e-mail me. Thanks.
