I've probably never met 90% of you... I used to do a lot of research
on cents back in those days and got terribly busy with work and other
nonsense. I did some posts surveying the contents of a Brinks box of
coins <Wells Fargo for those of you east of the Mississippi>. Now that
I've got some freedom, I thought I might get back into the fray of
arguing and so forth, which I think I hated back then but now I
remember fondly. Whatever, anyhow my question is regarding something I
can't dig up in the records. It's regarding a Sac dollar pulled from a
box of Cheerios before 2000, then stuck in an envelope with the
postage cancelled in 1999. It was put on eBay and the bids went
bananas and I was convinced this was due to some shills trying to
create interest in it. That was approximately the time I stopped
doing the newsgroup dance. I can't find out anything searching through
old posts but I'm certain some of you know what happened with that. I
can't believe the event that got me interested in getting back into
newsgroups has disappeared from the map. Does someone here remember
what happened with that Sac dollar? Did it become famous and sought
after or did it fail to create enthusiasm after the initial frenzy?

The Cheerios dollar is recognized now as a pre-production pattern, and
they are worth $5000 to $7000 in high grade.

This is not the coin I'm referring to. If you were here at the time
it'd be obvious as to what I'm referring to. But I guess this answers
my question about what happened to this particular coin. It faded into
nothing and now nobody knows about it. This coin was a 2000 coin
discovered in 1999, possibly like the one you provided but someone
went through the trouble of going to a post office, putting it into a
windowed envelope and canceling the postage in 1999, even though the
coin was dated 2000. Thanks anyway!

If you were around this newsgroup a few months
ago, you'll remember a 2000 Golden Dollar which somehow was found in
a
bag of quarters last year. The seller sent it to one of the grading
companies and had it slabbed, and the slab's label stated it was
certified in 1999. He put it up on eBay and got bids over
$1100.00 on it, but then closed the auction early, and bought it back
from
the high bidder. The Feds, perhaps the Secret Service, got involved
in it, and it got a lot of press, all because he possessed a coin
dated 2000 in 1999.
A little after that happened, Cheerios boxes with 2000 dated Lincoln
Cents started showing up in stores in the last week of December,
1999.
One of the newsgroup's regulars, Alan Mendelson, had the smarts to
get
some of these, run down to the Post Office on December 31st, 1999,
and
put them in window Priority envelopes and get them postmarked,
proving
he had them in his possession in 1999. I think he threw a couple up
on eBay and got around twenty or thirty bucks each for them.
Centless stuff
Thats the one I was talking about. Thats how the story went! I knew
there was something I missed. It was the cent in the envelope and I
remember what a hubbub it caused on the newsgroup about the guy who
slabbed a Sac dollar before it was issued, thanks!
