Man charged with taking safe filled with foreign coins from Bethlehem house

A man has been charged with stealing a safe filled
with foreign coins from a home Sunday while the
owners were at church.
John Toledo-Vazquez, 22, of 418 Wyandotte St.,
Bethlehem, is charged with burglary, theft,
receiving stolen property and tampering with
physical evidence. He was arraigned before
District Judge Patricia Romig-Passaro and is
in Northampton County Prison under $25,000 bail.
Police said Toledo-Vazquez broke into the home
of Edwin Gomez on Filmore Street, Bethlehem,
while the family was at church. Toledo-Vazquez
took a safe with coins from Mexico, France and
Spain and some personal documents, including
Gomez's diploma from Liberty High School.
In an interview with police, Toledo-Vazquez denied
stealing the safe, but police said they found
parts of the safe inside Toledo-Vazquez's home
and one of the stolen coins in the bed of his truck.
According to police:
Shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, Fountain Hill police
stopped a car in the 600 block of Broadway. Police
said Toledo-Vazquez was in the passenger seat and
Arnaldo Josue Rodriguez, 24, of Bethlehem was
driving.
An officer saw a safe in the front seat that
looked like it had been pried open and some
Mexican coins. The men told police the safe
belonged to Toledo-Vazquez. The men were released
after the traffic stop.
On Monday, Bethlehem police Detective Mark DiLuzio
saw a truck near Rodriguez's home in the 600 block
of Broadway. In the bed of the truck was a 1964
coin from Mexico, a coin Gomez said was in the safe.
Police searched both men's houses and found pieces
of the safe in a bedroom at Toledo-Vazquez's house.
Rodriguez admitted helping with the robbery and
said Toledo-Vazquez gave him two half-dollars to
help. No charges have been filed against Rodriguez.
In an interview with police, Toledo-Vazquez first
said the safe was his, then said he found it
near a garage on Sunday. He could not account for
the safe parts found inside his house.

Reminds me of a recent episode I saw of "Cops".
The cops are frisking some punk and find drugs in his pocket.
His excuse: "These aren't my pants!"

Cops is entertaining to watch how so many people catch themselves. They
agree to searches they don't need to agree to, they resist an officer's
command, or worse, try to get physical or run. A lot of these traffic stops
would be routine even though the people being pulled over are actually
guilty of a crime.
