Hayward Man Facing Charges for Counterfeit Coins

ALAMEDA, CA -- A Hayward man is facing charges in
a scam involving collectible coins that were
doctored to make them more valuable.
Alameda police say Roberto Rodriguez sold coins
that had been made from a valuable coin cut in
half and reattached to two halves of another
coin. They say he earned $75,000 in just one
transaction at an Alameda coin shop.
Police arrested him when he returned to sell
more coins. He's now free on $45,000 bail.

Inaccurate headline. The coins were altered, not made from scratch.

Altering a coin has never made a coin more valuable. In fact, it makes a
coin lose virtually all its value. It's pretty obvious that this reporter
is not the brightest bulb on the tree.

Huh? A "valuable" coin was cut in half? Hey, I'm going to go cut my 1909
plain Lincoln and my 1909SVDB Lincoln both in half and make a killing by
making them into a 1909VDB and a 1909-S. What?
And I'll bet this coin shop owner struts around considering himself a
"professional." Remind me never to buy from him.

Not only is the coin shop owner's integrity questionable, but he must have
failed to get ID from the seller, otherwise the police would have had an
address and the police wouldn't have had to wait until the guy came back to
the shop. I still have to sign an affidavit when I sell to dealers that
I've done business with for decades. Nothing personal, just good business.

Big Story amongst the Bay Area deelers the past few weeks ...
The coin in question was an 1884-P obverse in MS65 mated with
an 1881-S or 1882-S MS65 reverse. It not only fooled the
local shop deeler, it also fooled the Big Time National
Deeler who bought it from him, but not the Bigger Time
International Megadeeler he tried to sell it to ...
Although not mentioned in the article, the coin WUZ housed
in a counterfeit slab throughout the transactions.
Rumor has it that there was also a similar 1880-P
MS65 obverse mated with an 1883-O or 1884-O MS65
reverse hawked on the East Coast a few weeks ago.

Updated story from the local rag San Jose Murky News ...
undoubtedly in the CoCo Times as well.
IDs the shop name and shop owner and mentions the
counterfeit slab, but does not mention the PNG deeler
who I'm told bought the coin from the shop owner and
tried to flip it ... curious!
