Police: Trio Behind 12 Burglaries

Suspects Targeted Retirement Communities, Detectives Say

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Surprise police said they have solved 12
burglaries in Surprise and the Sun City area with the
arrests of one man and two women.

Lisa Lynn Soto, 37; Erika McCarthy, 20; and Hector
Zazueta, 55, all of Phoenix, were booked on charges of
burglary, theft, trafficking in stolen property,
possession of dangerous drugs and conspiracy to commit
burglary.

Detectives said they launched their investigation and
surveillance on the group after two homes in the Sun
City Grand community were burglarized in April 2008.

The burglars took over $100,000 in jewelry, rare coins,
guns and electronics, police said.

Forensic evidence collected at one of the crime scenes
led detectives to one of the burglars who was taken into
custody on Sept. 19, detectives said.

The other two people were linked to the crimes and were
arrested shortly a short time later, police said. Search
warrants served on the trio's hotel room's netted stolen
property and pawn slips linking them to other unsolved
burglaries, officers said.

Detective Mike Baldwin said it became evident during the
investigation and interviews that the burglars had a
preference for homes in retirement communities that
appeared vacant or to belong to "snowbirds."

"Serial numbers and descriptions of the stolen property
were vital in this investigation," Baldwin said.
