Thieves coin it in after second collection stolen

A second set of rare coins has been stolen from
a house in Broughton 18 months after a similar
collection, valued at £500,000, was pinched
from the same property.
In June 2007, the home of Lord and Lady Stewartby
was hit by thieves who bagged a collection of more
than 1,000 rare coins, prompting the owners to put
up a £50,000 reward for its return, now believed
to be the biggest unclaimed sum available for the
return of stolen goods in Scotland.
The collection, including coins dating back almost
900 years, has been described as the most important
collection of early Scottish coins ever assembled
and last month police renewed calls for information
regarding the theft.
But last Thursday thieves struck again, pocketing
another rare collection from the Peebleshire home.
The latest set is not thought to be as valuable as
the collection stolen last year.
Police say the coins were among various items stolen
from the home when it was broken into last week and
they are appealing for witnesses who may have seen
anyone in the area during the evening of Wednesday
or early hours of Thursday to contact them.
They are also keen to speak to anyone who saw any
vehicles in the area at the time to contact Peebles
police station on 01721 720637 or Hawick police
station on 01450 375051.
Lady Stewartby, who is the granddaughter of writer
John Buchan and was recently appointed Honorary
Sheriff in a ceremony at Selkirk Sheriff Court, was
unable to comment on the details of the theft.
