Goldberg Auction - Dan Holmes Early Cents

- The week of September 7th kicked off with the sale of phenomenal Large
Cents auctioned by the Goldbergs. First up was the monumental Dan Holmes
collection of Early Cents, where twenty or so coins crossed into six-figure
territory. The highlight was certainly when the Sheldon 79, 1795 Cent with a
Reeded Edge made history as the first million dollar penny, selling for
$1,265,000. It is the finest known of 7 examples and grades VG10 by PCGS.
And to think I quit bidding at $1.25M. Maybe next time.

It was actually pretty low-key. Applause rang out after the hammer came
down, but you didn't see much emotion on the floor. Rumor is that the guy
who bought it came with $2M in his account, ready to buy the coin for a
client.
Even though I've spent obscene money on a coin or two, I can't come anywhere
near relating to that. It goes to show that where there is money, the coin
market is alive and well. Where there isn't, which includes most places, it
is fickle and cynical.

appeal, and colonial or early u.s. are much loved. collecting by sheldon, or
overton for half dollar fans, has a lot of history, snob appeal and they are
considered elite coins.
there are lots of morgan collectors for each large cent guy but i'll take them
coppers anytime.
didn't sheldon right about the joy of spending the evening with a cigar box of
old cents?

gold coins have a similarly different appeal because gold makes men crazy.....

I currently have close to a hundred of my coppers consigned to, and graded
and priced by, a major copper dealer. Not a single one sold at either ANA
in August or Long Beach last week.

It was Bill Noyes who said, "Spending a quiet evening with a box of Large
Cents is a most pleasant experience."

Sure, I've known all this for years, but that doesn't sell coins into a
market such as we see today.

Hmm, I thought it was gold what makes women crazy and women what makes men

as a vga in 79 but somehow became a f12 in 2009. for 95 bucks more than i
paid. i'm sure you have better coins, i've always had cash constraints.
copper life rules, with fu music.
maybe your coins are too good for the average collector feeling the pinch but
not quite what the big money wants. stuff from the 30's-50's, (18, of course)
seems undervalued across the bords unless rare or really good. i claim no
expertise here, understand, i just watches and i waits. and snag anything i
think will move. for short money.
but i also collect 3 cent coins, so how smart can i be? i'm like 20th century
red sox fans were.....maybe this year! duh. but the silvers are cheap.
it still true that much gold can buy many women. or men. so gold makes people
crazy.
today's market takes some really creative selling. try something else. try
lots of something else. buy cheap cable and hawk them yourself.
