What "they" (Congress Critters) need to do is take the politics out of
our monetary system and, like Nike says, just do it. Sadly, even
though Ted Kennedy is gone, John Kerry is still around, and I doubt
Crane paper would give it up that easily.

A 629 year commemorative penny program! I think the mint should go
for it. Folks would just hoard the pennies away in their sock
drawers, effectively removing the one cent coin from circulation.

I find it interesting that their poll shows a 56/44 margin in favor of dumping
the $1 note for the coin (3326 responses).
Also, the 'half-billion dollar annual savings' thing was from a GAO report
released in the late 1990s. Adjusted for inflation and national growth, that
figure is likely well over a billion dollars per year now - not an
insignificant amount.
Will that alone solve the federal deficit? Of course not - but every bit does
help.
AND, with the dramatically reduced production demand at the USMint these days,
there should be plenty of unused capacity to make the 13-15 billion or so more
that will be needed to fully replace the banknote.
