Just got back from the three-times per year Springfield show (a local
affair) and also spent almost the whole day last Sunday in Urbana at
the C-U Coin Clubs show.

IMHO, both shows were a bit slower than the same time(s) in 2009.

The people who are always good buyers were at both shows and they were
most certainly buying. The Springfield show achieved the coin show
"buzz" that you like to see and feel, early today and kept it up for a
while. I know that at least 190 persons paid the $1.00 admission fee
as of 11:15 A.M. Additionally, CINA Members and kids get in for free.

The Springfield show had a number of young men who turned up, twenty-
ish kids, working class kids, who seemed to be interested. Maybe a
good sign.

Lots of optimism about the price prospects for silver at today's
Springfield show, despite the moderate butt-kicking silver got late
last week.

Urbana, which I both love and despise, is an odd town for coins. The
people who attend this show seem to know history better than most.
You actually meet people who are very well-educated in history and
languages. That positive factor said, they don't seem to have a big
budget for purchases. One very smart history professor-type fellow
turned down a Byzantine cup-shaped copper which is really quite nice,
and so I asked the dealer who had it and I got the thing for only
$5.00. Now, Urbana is usually too goddamn liberal for my tastes.
Urbana might be called South Madison, with much accuracy. But the
Urbana Civic Center is a fine fine building and on the whole, a great
venue for a show.

Oh, and my collection of Catherine the Great-era Russian 5 kopecks was
increased by four coins. One of the new acquisitions is superior and
the other three are much better than average.
