Not too sure yet if I like this effigy . . . she kind of looks like my Nanny
(grandmother from England). hey, the Queen IS a grandmother, so maybe
that's what they were going for. . .
let the new era of Canadian coin collecting begin. i wonder how long it
takes for the "old" designs to get saved by everybody in Canada who thinks
they would now be worth more than face value? This has been done enough in
the past (1990, 1965, etc) that there should be an idea. Couple years
maybe? then it's only the new design that is commonly seen?
i wonder if they are going to release new Silver and Gold Maple Leaf coins
for 2003?

It looks more flattering to me than several of the previous ones that
made her look stiff and lifeless. A winner, IMHO.

Oh hey, this new effigy is a lot better!!! than what they've had the
last fifteen years or so!!! Very classic and classy!
Now if the RCM clowns would just stop trying to collect our SSN#s, I
might be inclined to order from them again!!!

Seeing the queen without crown or regalia looks odd to me. I guess
George VI didn't have a crown on either, but... still...
Why do you think that eric ?

It always struck me that the last effigy of Queen Elizabeth must
surely have been the effort of a French Canadian separatist, she had
somewhat of a scowl.
Yes indeed, the Queen is a Grandmother, under most normal
circumstances she would have been a Great Grandmother by now. I think
this current treatment of her portrait is rather a flattering portrait
of a nearly 77 year old woman whom has been in power for 51 yrs.
Congrats to the RCM on this change, I look forward to getting some of
these in my change soon, hopefully my Canuck neighbours will be
spending them here in Michigan soon:)

Try to convince me that this lovely portrait (not) *wasn't* designed by a
republican:

(His name is Ian Rank-Broadley)
I think the Brits use the same appalling effigy(ies).
It seems our Canadian cousins are quite complimentary by comparison.

Because Canada is an independant country and has been since 1982. It needs it's
own head of states and the Governor General won't do.

I'm not fond of the new portrait but i think it looks better than
those designed by Maklouf which in my opinion were overrated... the
best one that QEII's had is the Machin one from 1968-1984. The first
one used on the pre-decimal stuff by Gillick suffers from lack of
detail due to being struck in such low relief, but could be considered
to be better than the present one, if this were overlooked.

Gas Mask on Queen's Head Prompts Legal Threat
Wed Jun 4,10:32 AM
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Royal Mail is threatening to sue an art
gallery for displaying three prints of Queen Elizabeth wearing a gas
mask -- works the artist says he created in response to the war in Iraq.
The Royal Mail said the gallery was breaking copyright laws by using a
portrait of the queen the mail has used on its postage stamps for over
30 years.
"We have been in touch with a gallery and pointed out that this is our
intellectual property and we have not given permission for it to be
used," a spokesman said.
The three prints each show a profile of the queen's head with a gas mask
strapped to it. The straps of the mask are tucked under the monarch's
crown.
The edges of the prints are serrated to make them look like stamps, and
they have "1st," "2nd" and "3rd" written on themin reference to the
priority system used by the Royal Mail. The prints are in different
colors, like stamps.
"To the first glance of the eye they do look like stamps, but on closer
inspection they're actually nothing like them," said a spokeswoman for
the Artrepublic gallery in the southern resort of Brighton.
"The queen has different hair, different neckline, different jewelry
... he's basically redrawn the image."
The works, entitled "Stamps of Mass Destruction," are the work of James
Cauty, former member of 1990s rave band KLF. " (end quote)
So cheer up, Canucks! It could be worse....

But then again, I didn't even know Canada was
allowed to use their own portraits. I thought
there was only one portrait, and everyone had
to use it, and I was wondering why Canada had
not updated their portrait yet!
