James K. Polk $1 coin to be unveiled locally

Ceremony slated 10 a.m.
Thursday at Columbia home

Special to The Daily Herald

The United States Mint will honor the nation's 11th
president by issuing the James K. Polk $1 coin in a
ceremony at the Polk Home Thursday.

Featured speakers at the 10 a.m. event will include
Polk biographer John Seigenthaler and Andrew
Brunhart, the deputy director of the U.S. Mint.

A ceremonial "coin pour" will mark the Polk dollar's
release into national circulation. At the conclusion
of the half-hour event, guests will be able to
exchange dollar bills for Polk coins and purchase
rolls of 25 Polk dollars. Every attendee who is 18
years old or younger will receive a free Polk coin.

The U.S. Mint launched its presidential dollar
series in 2007 with the George Washington $1 coin.
Since then, the mint has issued four coins per
year saluting the presidents in chronological
order. Complementing the presidential dollars,
the mint's First Spouse series features $10 gold
coins with images of the first ladies.

The James K. Polk Home in Columbia is the only
surviving residence of President Polk other than
the White House. In addition to the restored home
and the adjacent museum, the site includes the new
exhibition facility Polk Presidential Hall with
its inaugural exhibit

Three from Tennessee:
Frontier Path to the Presidency.
This exhibit on Andrew Jackson James K. Polk and
Andrew Johnson will be open to the public through
Aug. 30.

The Polk Home is located at 301 W. Seventh St. in
downtown Columbia. More information on the home
and the coin ceremony may be obtained by calling
(931) 388-2354.

So your saying they won't except other presidential dollar in exchange
for the Polk dollar? If so this doesn't sound like a smart way in
getting people to except the dollar coins.
