Near perfect copy of 1964-D Peace Dollar created...Should it be legal to own?

We recently covered this topic on our website, Coinzine, at this

. The Moonlight Mint has been "overstriking" Peace Dollars to redate
them 1964. The coins are near exact replicas...they carry the "D"
mint mark and since they are made from a Peace Dollar, they have the
same weight, diameter and composition a 1964 would. Do you guys think
these should be legal? Many collectors have voiced their sentiment
that there are enough counterfeits coming from China...why legally
create on in the US? On the other hand, with the 1964-D having been
completely destroyed, collectors should know that it's not an official
issue. What do you think?

I am not a lawyer, but I would bet money (anything from a nickel on
down) that a good one could find at least several reasons why changing
the date on a Peace Dollar would violate the law.

I don't think it would be illegal if the word "copy" or "replica" were
struck into the coin somewhere. The Royal Oak Mint has struck them to
original specs and offers them for sale.

Finances won't allow me to get my #2 "dream" coin (a genuine 1933
Saint), but I'm definitely interested in the ROM's replica. It has a
silver base with gold-plating. Very nice coin.

And if anyone is wondering, my #1 "dream" coin is an 1880 Flowing Hair
$4 Stella.

I forgot to mention. Again, if anyone is interested, the ROM's
replica coins are the same size as the genuine article. So all of you
Saint collectors can fill your Whitman's 1933 "hole" with something
solid.

watching as I wanted a 64 peace dollar. Any word on whats going on? Seems
like a long time to fix up a website.
