EXCITED archaeologists have unearthed a key piece
of Winchester's heritage.
They have uncovered a rare silver penny - one of
only five in the city - that would have been
currency during Alfred the Great's reign as King
of Wessex from 871 to 899.
It was found on the site of a former off-licence
on Jewry Street, which has been knocked down to
make way for a restaurant and apartments.
"We have found a range of Roman coins," said Susan
Clelland, site manager for Wessex Archaeology.
"But the most special find is the King Alfred silver
penny, which was just fantastic to uncover.
"So few silver pennies have been found. The fact we
found one of King Alfred's coins and we're in
Winchester is of great importance."
