I have this coin that has the profile bust of a bearded man wearing what
appears to be a toga, tied at his shoulder. There is some latin ? on
there that says:
"LVERVSAVGARM PARTHMAXIRPVIIII" on the other side is a charoit driver
with four horses side by side and it says " COS *II*
SC
"

the coin is about the size of a half dollar. what is this thing?

The coin is of Lucius Verus

Sear writes: ' L. Ceionius Commodus, later known as L. Aurelius Verus, was born
in AD 130, the son of Aelius Caesar. In AD 138 he was adopted by Antoninus,
but unlike M.Aurelius, who was adopted at the same time, he was not raised to
the rank of Caesar. Nevertheless, on the accession of Aurelius in AD 161,
Verus was immediately made co-emperor. He was also betrothed to Aurelius's
daughter, Lucilla, whom he married in AD 164. He campaigned in the East
from AD 163-5 with considerable success, but he was a weak man addicted to
pleasure and his death in 169 was a relief to his senior partner.

The obverse inscription actually reads:
L VERVS AVG ARM PARTH MAX TR P VIIII which indicates a date of 168 to 169,
but should have COS III if that is so.

What metal is it made of? It sounds like a sestertius from the size you
mention, which would be a brass (orichalcum). Sear does not list this
particular reverse with the quadriga (chariot with 4 horses).

Sounds like a sestertius of the emperor Lucius Verus (LVERVS), 161-169 AD.

I collect ancient and also have lists available (one's coming soon).

Sounds like you have a Roman coin minted by the emperor Lucius Verus,
probably a brass sestertius, circa 161-169 AD. Without an image to look
at I cant tell you if it is genuine. Value depends entirely on condition,
and if genuine could be worth around $50+.

Hope this helps!

The obverse inscription is that of Lucius Verus, Roman Emperor from 161
-169 AD.
You probably have a bronze Sestertius. If authentic, a nice coin to own.

Google search "tourist coin". I've got one too. Made in the 1960s. If by itself, it's worth a couple dollars. If inlaid in a necklace by Napier in their costume jewelry line from the '60s, it is worth well over a hundred dollars.
