$1 Million Dollar Bill cashed at Bank ...

A woman walked into a bank the other day and handed the teller a One Million
Dollar Bill - she wanted to open an account and have some of the money
transferred into her husband's account.

The teller accepted the Bill and made the transactions.

Dairy Queen, you're vindicated!

Here is a news story from the Sunday Observer in Sri Lanka (Ceylon).
They state in the story that, million dollar bills are legal tender
in the U.S. because,

"A special issue of this denomination with certificates were printed
and made a legal tender in the USA for the convenience of
millionaires."

I don't like carrying around "Millions", to much trouble to break. ;-P
I never carry around anything larger than a $ 100,000. How about you?
;-)

Here is the story from Oct. 11, 1998, for what it's worth:

http://www.lanka.net/lakehouse/1998/10/11/new13.html

"Woman with a million dollar bill note arrested
By Anton Nonis

CHILAW POLICE arrested a woman who attempted to encash US dollar one
million currency note. The currency note was authenticated as a
genuine one by a document. A special issue of this denomination with
certificates were printed and made a legal tender in the USA for the
convenience of millionaires.

The suspect had returned from India recently and had unsuccessfully
attempted to encash it in Chilaw, Negombo, Seeduwa and Wattala areas.
Chilaw Police, on information received, sent a posse of policemen in
mufti, posed as rich businessmen and arrived in a Pajero intercooler,
confronted the man who had acted as broker who had tried to help the
woman to encash the million dollar bill.

The broker who mistook the policemen in mufti as genuine businessmen,
brought forth the woman with the currency (Rs.65 million) note to a
place in Wattala on Friday afternoon. From there she was driven to the
Chilaw Police. The broker too was arrested.

Police sources said that the woman was a Sri Lankan Malay (37), had
returned from India recently. She was a Sri Lankan citizen but had
lived in India for several years.

Sources added that the currency bill looked genuine and is expected to
be sent to the Central Bank for verification. But Police sources
further added that even if it is genuine, the suspect should have made
a declaration with the Customs on her arrival.

Investigations are now on to ascertain as to how she came about to
possess this currency note. A special police team headed by SSP Gamini
de Silva of the Chilaw Police is conducting investigations.

Meanwhile well informed sources said that million dollar currencies
could be traded only among the members of the millionaires'
Association and the highest denomination of the American dollar that
is in normal use is $ 5,000."

counterfeit bills in the woman's duffel bag. The woman told
authorities that her hobby was "making money." She apparently made the
bogus million-dollar bill by pasting zeroes on a one-dollar bill and
duplicating it on a color copier. The judge in the case told the woman
something she apparently didn't know: the U.S. Treasury doesn't make
one-million-dollar bills. When he tried to explain to her that it's
illegal for private citizens to make their own money, the woman
insisted "In this case it was legal, sir."

What's the fuss? Say she spent $1 & wanted change back from her
million. They could have just given her nine of the new $111,111 bills.

IIRC, the highest U.S. denomination was the $100,000 (Woodrow Wilson) which
was used only for inter-bank transfers not circulation. The highest
denomination made for circulation was the $10,000 note. There has never
been a $1,000,000 note. I am not sure what denomination is the highest in
circulation now (the $1,000 ?) but it is not the $5,000 or $10,000 notes,
which are obsolete...

There's probably a few $10,000's still in circulation, but the highest
currently printed is $100.

Actually, I think I read somewhere that all the notes above $1,000 (and many
of the $1,000 notes also) are so old (1928?) that they're worth more than
face even in used grades... so they don't circulate to any degree...

I have seen $500s in circulation, however... ;-)

When I was about 8 years old I found a check that had been run over by a
lot of cars on the Midway Drive In Theater grounds, made out to "Cash" for
a million dollars. My heart started pounding like mad, I was so happy.
Without telling anyone I had a million dollar check I waited until no one
was home & I called the bank on which the check was drawn. Imagine some
teller or manager being asked by a child:

"I found a million dollar check made out to cash."
"A million dollars really?"
"Yes, I counted the zeros, it's a million dollars."
"Who made out the check?"
"I can't tell, the check has been run over by so many cars & got rained on."
"It was probably somebody's joke."
"No, it's a real check. Can I cash it?"
"No, you should either mail it to us, or tear it up & throw it away."

I tried to talk them out of their alternative ideas, but they just
wouldn't go along with mine.

The best blunders I remember is when some boob at the bank converts a
german inflation era bill, I remember in Michigan some years ago some
teller converted a 100,000 Mark note at the then current rate(30 some
thousand dollars). There was then a run on the coin shops for these old
notes. Anybody got change for my 1,000,000,000 Mark note? Bernie

Have 'em order a cupla hundred for you...heh. I think they sell around $650
when available.

It may be worth a try...some banks have been known to actually have them
available...but they ARE worth more than face value to collectors. Most circ
$1000s trade around $1200, I believe.

I'd seriously give them a call and take them a check for $5000 and see if they
can get 10 or so in a week...then drop me an email...heh. We'll figger out
what to do from there...but I think we may be able to get a free $500 bill for
each of us, if it works...

Dondi3's post reminds me of a recent trip to Vegas. I was at the cage at
Caesars cashing a check and at the window next to me a well dressed man was
asking the teller (cashier) if any $500 or $1000 bills were available? the
teller politely said no, then proceeded to cash the man's check. After the man
walked away the teller and I exchanged glances then we both started to chuckle.
We both knew that $500 and $1000 bills command a premium. So I asked, do you
ever get them? He said no, but people ask, and if ever one came in the tellers
would grab them real fast. cheers, alan mendelson

How much did the bank lose when they realized their mistake? I'm guessing
thet had a little more information on the depositor than DQ did, and knew
where to get their money back.

Whoever told you that probably doesn't know what they're talking about.
They are supposed to turn $500+ notes over to the Fed.

If you can actually get $500 notes that aren't mangled, I'm a buyer at $525.
I'll be happy to take a steady supply of them, if you want to make yourself
a little extra income.

Yes, I didn't think I'd have to explain that they be genuine, etc, in a coin

If it's a U.S. bill, it's a novelty bill, worth absolutely nothing. I have a few of them. My own design features the Statue of Liberty. There are Trillion Dollar notes available that feature Pres. Obama.

The highest denomination for any U.S. currency was the $100,000 and was only used for transactions between the different Federal Reserve Banks. The highest circulating note was the $10,000, followed by (in decreasing order) the $5,000, $1,000, $500, $100, $50, $20, $10, $5, $2, and $1. Regardless of age, every U.S. currency note is still worth its face value, though the higher denominations ($500 and above) are worth more as collector pieces.
