I throw my trime's worth in on this one. Chances are your sister's
$50 is worth $50, maybe a little more if it's in decent condition. A
currency collector may offer a few bucks over face for it, but you're
not going to the Bahama's on it.
Silver in change could be any number of reasons. Busted collections
from people who are in need of cash is one option. Another that most
non-collectors don't think about is stolen collections that the
thieves are afraid will get them caught if they try to fence them, so
they spend them at face. Obviously, the older the coin, the more
likely it will be spotted, suspiciously.
