MS70 or acetone for cloudy proofs?

I have six silver proof coins that ended up getting cloudy from what I
think is PVC slime.

Which is the better way to clear them up, MS70 or acetone and what are
the differences in procedure to use them (other than good ventilation)?

Should I soak the coin in MS70, and if so, for how long? I do know you
can soak the coin in acetone (but for how long?) Keep in mind that this
is these six coins are silver proofs.

Frank Provasek, or any others who are really in the know about this, are
welcome to reply. Flamers need not reply.

Thanks in advance!

Nick

MS70 works great for these. Gently swap the coin with a q-Tip
dipped in MS70. The haze instantly goes away. Rinse in distilled
water. Drying the coin is the biggest problem. A can of compressed
air is safest. Another warning, the stuff is a very strong alkaline
detergent and will make your hands slippery!

I'd very much like to get hold of some of that MS70 stuff. Is it
exportable?

I would start with Acetone myself. The reason is that acetone will not
alter a coin's surface, but MS70 will. Procedure is simply, dip the
coins in the acetone. Let them sit for a couple of minutes. If the
acetone gets dirty, change it. Follow up with a dip in distilled water
and either pat dry or air dry. If the Acetone doesn't get the gunk off,
then go to more extreme measures, such as MS70.

It can do worse than make your hands slippery. It can cause you to
loose a layer of skin and leave a raw sore. Kinda like a blister.
Keep it off your skin!!! If contact is made, wash thoroughly with soap
and water followed with a good rinse.

It's an "Industrial Strength Coin Brightener" put out by a company
identified on the bottle as Betterbuilt Chemicals. Product comes in a 8
ounce black bottle with white writing. Costs about $10. Most full
service dealers carry it.

You might try Jake's Marketplace. They might be able to ship it
although I suspect it would have to come surface mail. Airlines are so
paranoid that you would probably have difficulity sending distilled
water.
I'll ask my local PO tomorrow what it would take.

MS70 does not alter the coins surface.

I hear about "quick" dips and I assume the "quick" we are talking about
is in seconds or minutes.
This brings to my mind the question of what happens to a coin left in
MS70 or acetone for hours at a time? That might give one a clue as to
whether either one alters surfaces.
I have never used either and chemistry class was a long time ago so I
could be way off base (or acid as the case may be.)

Get yourself some E/Zest dip/Cleaner,dilute 50/50 with distilled
water.Dip coin in approx 3 seconds.than redip in distilled water
DO NOT RUB WITH Q TIP OR COTTON BALL anything for that
matter..Have a hair blower handy and put it on high not HOT,and
dry coin off.Trust me in my 40yrs i found this to be the
safest.Again do not use Q tip or cotton ball it will leave signs
of hairlines under magnification.Al

A quick dip should be 1 or 2 seconds. Any reactive substance will alter the
surface somewhat. What a quick dip and a thorough rinsing trries to accomplish
is to minimize the alteration to the toned areas.

The directions on MS70 starts with this sentence:
MS70 is not a dip and will not work by dipping your coin.

MS70 and Acetone will not alter the coins surface even if left soaking for
days. It may take weeks for Acetone to work. MS70 should work in minutes.
Both will only remove surface contaminants and will not remove toning.
