interested in the results please post it here otherwise I will not waist
the bandwidth.
George
I think it is interesting and I also like people to post their auctions.

Any and all measured information of "the best" auction services is always
welcome. You might consider mentioning the item for those who don't or
can't go to the URLs.

Make sure you post the links. I am a member of all three and I will be keeping
an eye on the 1981. :-)

They may get traffic but hardly any bids
it seems. I've gone through page after
page of listings there with zero bids
being registered. If I was a seller I
would be pretty discouraged.
I have bought a couple of things on yahoo. I think part of the problem is that
most people look at it like an auction site, which it is rarely used for.
Mostly it is a spot to sell coins at a set price or a storefront for a dealer
without a website. There is less chance for a great snipe but more of a chance
to actually "win" a coin if you do like the price it is being offered for.
I would think Yahoo would be better off promoting it as an online store if
Auctions weren't such a buzzword because of ebay's success.
I am not sure if items other than coins are similar in the way the auctions
are typically run or not.

I think I resemble that statement.......
George

I went and checked for myself just this week past ... someone had posted a
link, and I started there and then zoomed into my area of interest: bust
halves.
Now, I'm speaking primarily from observations in this one category, but I
wouldn't be surprised to find the same patterns elsewhere. Yes, they have
a lot of listings. The not-so-curious thing was that, even when viewing
those auctions getting ready to close, there weren't that many bidders.
Most auctions were closing without a single bid. Looking at the "minimum
bids", it was easy to see why.
Looks like a conglomerate of dealer retail price lists to me ... some of
the asking prices were fishing for desperate buyers, IMO. They weren't
finding any.
There were a few "genuine" auctions, but it seemed that most of the ones I
checked had a very high opening bid, and often I saw a "buy price" equal
to the opening bid, or a very, very small percentage more (the one I
remember was $10 above the $170 starting bid, from memory).
Sure, you can still find this kind of (non) "auction" on eBay, but it's
easier to find cases where the competition is setting the selling price,
not the seller. Perhaps Yahoo suffers some from the "free listing"
approach. I know I haven't bothered to check back with the Yahoo auctions
since the first peek. I might, one day. ITMT, I still check eBay every
day.

George's auctions prove my point, as you can see
that the difference between Yahoo and Ebay is very small
because he started the bidding at 1 cent
(You don't see that in Yahoo as much as you see it in Ebay)

If you count your time as worth something then your effort
is wasted if you don't sell anything. IME, people who are
successful at Yahoo auctions price things at or slightly
below the reasonable retail value of the item. As people
have mentioned before, starting the bid too low can result
in you selling the item for your opening bid.
: George's auctions prove my point, as you can see
: that the difference between Yahoo and Ebay is very small

: (You don't see that in Yahoo as much as you see it in Ebay)
It does depend on the demand for the item. Items with a
high demand will bring a good price when you start the bid
low. Items with little in the way of demand, but with a
substantial value, may kill the seller.

Not time enough! I chose unwisely with yahoo and was out bid before I
knew it. Bidvalley was completed when I saw this post! I was going to
go to about $25 :-)

Stu I will do this again in a few weeks. This week is going to be
1995-S MS 69 Basketball Half Dollars.
I goofed on bid valley it was supposed to end tonight with the others.
Thanks for the bids.
George
I was really surprised that ebay went that high (benefit from a couple
of snipers?), but other than that the breakdown is about what I would
expect

For me it was about $25 but I picked the wrong auction to go for. :-)

I think it is an interesting idea (as long as you are comfortable
with the results) but I will be an observer only for the current
comparison. There are only a few Commemoratives that I am
currently interested in. :-)

Well you guys figure it out. There was snipping on both ebay and yahoo.
Bid Valley did close one day early as I goofed.
As to the auctions setting the real price instead of colored sheets
what is the real price on this set.
Baseball half dollar is up but I started a new thread.

Billy as long as I make at least my cost and fees I will continue doing
this once a week. When you guys lose interest then I will quit posting.
I have a "day" job so this is fun for me. A good dinner out would cost a
lot more than what I pay for each lot of 3 and that would only last one
evening. This lasts a week and keeps me off the street. : > )
George
I think the real question is why does Bid Valley even figure
into this experiment anyway!!!
