First I want to publically thank Christian F. for posting about here earlier
this month. Thank you, I didn't even know it existed, and the US publication
Coin World only printed a blurp about it in last week's issue..

Secondly, I ordered one from here::

http://www.koninklijkenederlandsemunt.nl/coinshop/eng/frames.asp?language=US
A&men=menu-cs&content=../products&sitemenu=sitemenu&topbut=cs

Third item down on that page.. total cost with postage, packing, dealer
prep, pinstriping, undercoating, floor mats and the optional trailer towing
package charged to me, about $25.00..

I ordered it on 4/2/03..

They SHIPPED it on 4/2/03.. now that's what I call service.. (Are you
listening Mr. Pope??)..

Arrived in my mailbox today 12 light years away 4/10/03.. a week and a day
from Europe. Can't complain about that. Very interesting outer protective
package, kind of like what Amazon would ship a paperback book in.. i.e. "The
mailman can't bend it even if he tries a lot." Inside, a lovely little
glossy slipcovered case with the encapsulated coin in a fold out explanatory
card with lots of beautiful artwork and illustrations and text in both Dutch
and English.. very impressive, high quality packaging.

The design of the coin, Van Gogh's self portrait made out of tiny letters
that spell "Van Gogh", almost in the pointillist style, is unlike any other
coin design I've ever seen. Queen Beatrix' Portrait on the other side gets
the same treatment with her face made up of tiny letters of her country's
name..

Totally satisfied with both the service and the product.

I second that. The Dutch mint (and also the Austrian mint BTW) usually
is fast and reliable. I ordered two Van Gogh coins (silver, prooflike)
shortly before the first day of issue, paid about € 45 ... and got them
within a few days! Here in Germany the proof versions are issued/mailed
quite a long time after the standard versions.

As for the three non-EU cuntries that also issue euro coins (Monaco, San
Marino, Vatican), I am, like you, quite disappointed by their service,
and thinking about "dropping" them. Heck, I cannot collect all euros,
regular coins and commems, anyway. Collecting coins is a hobby for me,
and is not supposed to cause heart attacks or stomach ulcers ;-)

Well let's see what I have pending with those three jokers this year..

a) 2002 Vatican Proof Set - still unresolved. $80.00 paid last year. No set
received. Multiple promises of a refund or a credit. Mailed order for 2003
sets on 5 March, 2003, got back return receipt for envelope two weeks later.
Unknown if they will charge me or apply the $80.00 as a credit.. or if it
will result in another ulcer..

b) 2003 San Marino Stuff - got a snail from them on Friday saying sets had
been reserved for me on their subscription service and I would be charged
$xx.xx. So far so good..

c) 2002 Monaco Set - got official form all in French, (I had to type it all
into an online translator to turn it into English so I was sure of what it
said, like, what, they can't print it in two languages!?).. filled it out,
and mailed it back the same day a couple weeks ago. Waiting to see what
happens..

Meanwhile, Ordered the Dutch Proof-like Van Gogh Silver Coin from The Royal
Dutch Mint on 02 March, 2003, charged and shipped the same day and it came
in the mail on 10 March, 2003. Like you say, they have their act together..
I'm not trying to go after all the Euro Commemoratives.. I'd be broke if I
did.. but I couldn't resist that Van Gogh due to its wonderfully innovative
design, and I hold a degree in Art History so I studied him in college..
besides having seen Kirk Douglas portray him in "Lust For Life" quite a few
times.. had to have it.. really a beautiful coin.. and the slipcase
packaging was gorgeous too..

It's hard to believe that this very troubled genius only sold ONE painting
during his life, died penniless in the gutter, and now his works are worth
millions.. actually, it's not that hard to believe..

Anyone know if the Iowa State Quarter is going to have Grant Woods'
"American Gothic" on it or not? It'd be nice to see at least ONE famous REAL
American artist represented on one of these things before the program is
over..

Well, I made the mistake of trusting the AASFN when they stated that, if
you do not want a subscription, you can still place single orders. After
that, I have received two of their bulletins (#43 and 44) but have not
received any kind of order form. Too bad, but as I wrote, I don't really
need or want all those euro commems anyway ...

I, too, received their number 44 bulletin and I really didn't understand
what they want to say regarding the Olympic diptych!
I received some time ago their order form for the 2003 Euro set and silver
coins, I replied and sent payment (cc) and they sent me a notice that my
order was accepted and that I will receive them soon.
Question: is this a "subscription" or I will not receive other order forms
for future coins?
