Thanks for the link. I got myself an Australian polymer banknote
around the turn of the millennium. I held it in my hand and at first
thought: "Must be some mistake - this isn't plastic!". It just felt
too natural, but when I examined it more closely, it truly was
polymer, and it wouldn't tear either, of course. How long before every
country adopts these? Here in the UK our fivers (five pound notes) get
dirty and tatty very quickly. A polymer note would be a big
improvement.

I look forward to seeing them someday. I keep a stash of Canadian
currency for use when I travel there so at some point I will probably
need to go and exchange the old bills for new ones. Otherwise I might
get another cross-eyed look like I did when I used an old CAD$10 "Bird
of Canada" series bill to pay for something. The "Canadian Journey"
bills were already well established and the cashier was reluctant to
accept it (but finally did).

Also I find the Canadian paper not as durable as the United States
paper. I had Canadian bill in hand one time while waiting to pay for
something and I tugged on the ends as I have often done with paper
money. The bill split in half! Luckily the cashier accepted it and
even had tape next to the register to tape it back together again.
