sofa cushions.
A rare 130-year-old gold coin makes an appearance
this weekend at the Santa Clara Coin, Stamp &
Collectibles Expo in the Santa Clara Convention
Center.

The rare piece will be a part of the Coin,
Stamp & Collectibles Expo.

Known as the "Stella" gold coin because of its
five-pointed star design on the back, the unique
piece is one of only 425 made as pattern or
experimental pieces in 1879 at the Philadelphia
Mint.
It's about the size of a quarter and at the time
it was made, was worth $4 but the Stella visiting
this weekend is insured for about a million dollars.
Visitors to the coin show are encouraged to bring
their "scrap" gold, including jewelry and dental
gold, to be evaluated for their worth.
Now, think Mike Myers as Goldmember and imagine
his excitement as he smiles and says "gooowld"
upon seeing this beauty.

In America it has become chic to assign varying degrees to the word
"unique" - most unique, very unique, quite unique, almost unique, etc.

That's one of my pet peeves also.
Either something is unique or it is not.
No middle ground there.
OTOH, "almost" unique seems a fair use for a very rare item of which
only 2 or 3 are known.

You've got a point there, but "2 or 3 known" is a much less pretentious
descriptor for such a piece, and actually gives more information than
"almost unique."
