I collect small plastic NFL football helmets (from gumball machines),
and I need two more to complete my collection. I'm getting pretty
anxious - every trip to the store brings at least a few tries at
obtaining those elusive last two helmets.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I'm also a university professor who
writes frequently on why people collect.
I'd greatly appreciate your responses, either to the group or offline
at rcb...@comcast.net, to these questions:
Take me through what you were thinking when you completed the
collection.
Walk me through the pursuit of that final item.
Again, I'm indebted to those who respond. I do intend to write about
what I learn - your identity will be protected. Thanks again.
I am fairly close to completing my collection of books about the
Vietnam conflict. There are two or three books that I would like to
have, but either the price is too high (for me) or copies in very good
condition are rare. Now what to do? Do I look for better copies of
books I have now? Look for inscribed copies? I have started thinking
about other areas of collecting specialties. I will probably start
collecting books about World War I, even though the US only had a
small role. What appeals to me are the changes that happened as a
result of WWI, not just the conflict itself. And also the sense of
irony, as Paul Fussell expressed.

I don't know if any book collector ever regards their collection as truly
complete.
There is always that copy in better condition that would sure look good on
the shelf...

Not personally, but my ex-wife has a complete set of my testicles.
Thanks to all who have responded - Ron Bishop
There are many well documented examples of collectors auctioning off
their entire collections, and starting again in a totally different
field. So well documented in fact that I can't think of any, OTTOMH.
Not just in books but in all fields of collecting.
