Some time ago I recall hearing some unkind things mentioned about him. I
have seen his adds in trade journals over the years and would like to know
more about his reputation.

Please be more specific as to what you would really like to know. He was big in
the coin indusrty, invented a car, now grades cards throughout the world.

Alan Hager is the Anti-Christ in the coin, stamp and sportscard hobby. He
freely admits he has stolen from people in all phases of this business. He
is the WORST person to be affiliated with and he own ASA grading service.
Stay away. Stay far far away.

I was basically just curious about his reputation in the sportscard
industry. I've read the adds for his price guide and I use to see him
selling 'super rare' vintage stuff in top condition. He use to plug the
arrowhead holders. I always had a weird feeling about him. Not sure why.

How does he stay in buisness with such a reputation? Then again, I suppose
I could ask the same question about those shop-at-home people.

For some great reading about Hager, read the VCBC Magazine (vintage
& classic baseball collector) 16 page article ripping into Alan and his
reputation. Great piece of work.

Using questionable business tactics, Hager is able to get quality stuff at
ridiculously low prices. I've posted before about dealers that are able to
obtain stuff that was inherited or has otherwise fallen into unknowledgable
hands, thereby being easy to get for a song. Hager is a master at this. His
reputation is irrelevent for two reasons:

1.) He is the most well known dealer outside the hobby due to his ads and
numerous television appearances. He does almost all buying from outside the
hobby mainstream and also does a lot of selling outside the hobby as well.

2.) I've addressed the isssue of OCD and addiction. Lots of collectors don't
care about his business practices and are willing to pay his price on
something they just have to have no matter what the cost.

3.) He horded a heck of a lot of stuff in the 70's and is selling it now(this
point is purely an educated guess).

You might think that my posts on this matter have been odd, or just plain
wrong, but it truthfully addresses why Mr Hager has been able to do so well.

Unfortunately his presence in the hobby is not with the dealers it is with
the public. I have never seen one of his ads nor is he a marketing genius.
I couldn't begin to think where he gets his inventory from unless its the
same old stuff from days past. His catalog/price guide is misinforming and
unreliable. The prices are unconcionable. I don't see him in the hobby as
any type of force. I do shows around the country and in the 4 years I have
done them Hager has been to only one (Chantilly VA). Even there the people
knew to stay away from him.
The point in which his reputation comes into play is when you buy from
him. I wouldn't touch anything Pre-War or Post-war from him for fear of it
being altered in some kind of fashion. The grading sytems, other than his
ASA, put Hager into perspective. I personally know collectors that have
been burned by Hager and his mastery of deception. Unfortunately ours is a
species of amnesiacs. We tend to forget too quickly. And those who do,
continue to get burned by Alan Hager. It surprises me we havent seen his
face in the newsgroup by now. Where else can you hide yourself so well?
