I have a question about United States postal money orders that are sent
from the U.S. to Canada. Are these accepted in Canada? I ask this
because on the bottom of the money order that I looked at here in
Pennsylvania it says "negotiable only in the U.S. and possesions."
Please either post your answer to the newsgroup or e-mail directly to
me ASAP. Thanks a lot.

Thats what it says, and that's exactly what it means. You need to send
a bank money order, preferrably in canadian funds, unless of course they
specify US funds.

I get Money orders from the States all the time (I'm in Edmonton).
Canadian backs have no problem taking US checks/money orders. I guess
probably because we deal with US funds a lot up here (well, atleast
compared to the amount that US banks deal with Cdn funds)

To answer your question:
In Canada, US postal money orders aren't worth the paper they
are printed on. I tried to cash one in three different places and none
will accept them. "Negotiable in the US and Possessions" means
exactly what it says.

Disagree a little: I have made many deals with Canadians where they
request MO's. They apparently have no problem depositing/cashing them.
I have used only U.S. issued MO's including U.S. Postal Service. If
there was a regular problem I assume/know that it would be a recurring
problem mentioned here and in the deals I have made.
Item of note: I have never dealt with receiving MO's. I don't know
how my bank would deal with them.

I have to agree. I personally prefer money orders of checks.
That way, I don't have to wait for any check to clear, and I know that the
moneys in my account. I've gotten MOs from every bank you can think of
from the states (ok so I'm exagerating), but I have NEVER once had a
problem take a US money order. My bank simply processes it as a check,
and it goes right into my account.

YES!

The US Dollar is accepted in Canada. The Canadian bank or trust company
will give your customer that day's exchange rate on the money order when
deposited.

If Canadian suppliers/customers wish to do more business in US dollars,
you might want to consider opening a US dollar account at your
bank/trust company as I did.

For a fee of $3.00 US a month, I get 25 FREE transactions ie. 25 US
money orders FREE (banks, and Canada Post charge $3.00 or more for each
one Canadian funds.) Simply purchase 2 money orders a month and It's
paid for. AND... you get a preferred exchange rate. something like 1.47%
better... Hey, it's better in YOU pocket than their's!!!

That is not true, you can send an international money order from the PO
though and I have sent that to many people in Canada without any problems.

The cost: $3 instead of $1 for a regular PO money order.

But, you may want to ask the person who is getting the m/o. Some Canadians
have US dollar checking accounts, so they can accept any personal checks or
any regular money orders without any problems.
