Ch 11 News of Ft. Worth, TX is investigating a report of an "ill fated
attempt" (their words), on Mt. Everest. In particular, they believe that
Dr. Beck Weathers, a Dallas, TX climber, is involved.

Does anyone have any information on this? Lots of us here in Dallas know
Beck.

Thanks,

Eric

Portland Oregon Ch. 6 (KOIN TV) reported tonight that 3 members, two
from Washington State including the expedition leader are reported missing
while descending Everest. High winds and clouds, which are suspected of
contributing to the accident are hindering Search by other members.

I checked Outside Online, and they are reporting on this.
The situation is indeed very bad. It is the relatively
high profile Mountain Madness expedition. Scott Fischer may
now be dead. It seems nobody is indestructable. Apparently
5 others are missing. Quoting from the OO article:

"The missing were identified as 47-year-old Japanese woman
Yasuko Namba, New Zealander Andrew Harris, and Americans
Seaborn Beck Weathers and Douglas Hansen."

Outside Online's address is:
http://outside.starwave.com/outside/online/

They will be about the most direct sources of news on this.

Sorry, that should have been 4 others. And all of Scott's
Mountain Madness clients (Sandy Pittman, et. al.) are
supposedly now safe at Camp 2. The missing are from
other group(s).

The missing are Yasuko Namba, Andrew Harris, Seaborn Beck
Weathers and Douglas Hansen. SAR underway as of Saturday evening,
USA time. Still some hope for these people, not much hope for
Scott Fischer.

Information received from New Zealand base camp was that Beck Weathers
was alive but in critical condition at camp 4. It seemes that he was in
a coma like state when he was found covered in about a half foot of snow.
Rob Hall was still on the mountain waiting for oxygen no further word on
Andy Harris and Doug Hanson or Lou Kasischke.

I heard on the radio this morning that a helicopter rescued two climbers
at 5700m (approx.) but that more are still missing.

In article <4n3r3g$e...@nntp4.u.washington.edu>, er...@u.washington.edu says...

Make that 7; 3 Indians also died on the North side in the same storm.

Outside Online has the most up to date reports I've found.

On the South Col route Rob Hall, Scott Fischer, Yasuko Namba, Andrew Harris
and Doug Hansen are dead. Apparently all the other members of Rob and
Scott's groups are safely down.
