I want to thank everyone out there for pulling for me when I was down and out.
I had no idea that there were that many caring people in my life. The real
skinny is this: I was up on the Rainbow Wall in Red Rocks helping a good friend
of mine Brian Mcray finish a new big wall line he had been working on for a few
weeks. the technical aid was done and we had cleared the enormous arched roofs
he had pushed the line through. The plan was to spend two days and one night on
the wall to wrap this line up. because of the rediculous park rules in Red
rocks concerning overnight bivies we decided to have Roxanne (Brian's wife)
drop us off and we would use my new cell phone at the summit to let her know we
were on the way down and possible late (this would avoid the inevitable $50
fine we would recieve if we were late.) We jugged the lines and Brian led the
first pitch, a very run out and loose 65 meter pitch with minimal gear. HE
hauled, I cleaned and then it was my turn. I headed straight off the anchor and
found no pro for the first 50 feet (the climbing was easy). I stuffed in a
horizontal 3 camelot and got 25 feet above that were the climbing became a bit
more technical, easy 5.10, and I started traversing left towards a good number
of patinaed edges. after a few feet of this i hit one hold solidly with my hand
and it felt solid so i moved onto it. I matched, shifted my wait and as I was
reaching for the next hold, the edge tore out of the wall. I starteed
cartwheeling down a 60+ foot fall and woke up in a daze. aparently unconcious
for 2.5 minutes. Brian screamed over and i could barely communicate becase my
lungs had partially collapsed. I managed to move a foot up in agony to a butt
cheek and a half ledge and sat facing out with my feet on some small steps and
my arms pressed out trying to hold my innerds in tact. Brian pulled out my cell
phone and I squeeked out instructions to him on how to use it. once we had the
proper athorities in on our predicament brian rope soloed up to me and put a
makeshift anchor around me in the chossy rock. we sat in this possition for 6
hours until Search and rescue paramedics showed up. To make a long story shrter
the carefully dragged me up the remaining 300 feet of the 1000 foot mountain
and saved my life. I was put onto the pod of a small Huey with the paramedics
feet on my chest and flown down to the parking lot where one more chopper
waited to take me to the med center.
Apparently I broke 5 vertabrae, obliterating two and ruining 3 disks. My spinal
cord was wrapped all around this and a couple of bone shards were stuck in it.
The doctors could not understand why i wasn't paralized but expected i would be
after the first surgery. I came out of that one still moving my toes and let my
wife know if i could just pull through the second surgery I would likely not be
a parpalegic. The second was a tough one were they cut into my side 18 inches
and cut out one of my ribs (apparently men have an extra one and they felt i
could do without it) pulled out my intestines and anything else in the way and
worked on the front of my spine. It was successfull!
10 days in a Vegas Trauma ICU an airambulance to Salt lake and 7 more days in
rehab and here I am walking and talking and besudes the chest brace and the
rediculous amount of pain killers in my system I feel pretty good. In fact i
feel like I have a whole new lease on life. I know I'm a better person for the
experience and I expect that this was part of my fate. Time to move on to the
next great adventure.
I want to thank you all for pulling for me. I still have a long road ahead of
me but it's people like you that make it worth traveling.
If you have any questions please give me a buzz
