I read that the Cradle Rock area in Princeton was privately owned. Are
climbers accepted there? I am interested in bouldering there with my
ten-year old daughter and it would be embarrassing if we were kicked-off for
trespassing. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

When I was climbing there I believe that it was bought by the city or county and
made into a sort of unofficial park. Geology classes go on there and lots of
people hike, bike, and boulder there. This was about 4 years ago. We never had
any problems bouldering there even before this supposed purchase. Just don't
park in people's driveways. They built a couple of houses right at the
entrance. Park a block back and walk in. (about 100 yards). I would check
with the people at the Nickel, in the Princeton Shopping Center. Hopefully they
still have some people who work there that are avid climbers.

Yes and no. I bouldered at Cradle Rock many times in the late 80's and early
90's, and it has always been a quiet, positive experience. I believe some
(if not all) of the land is privately owned, yes, specifically the "Gamma"
area. Climbers have been accepted there, when they have maintained a low and
repectable profile. If you approach from behind ATT, don't park right at the
end of the road. Don't allow dogs to run off-leash. Don't make lots of
noise. If you see local homeowners, be friendly ;)

If you are going there with a child, the best problems will be at the "Beta"
area, the area where the actual Cradle Rock resides. This small outcrop is
easily recognzed by the "Burt and Carol" problem - you cant miss the spray
paint. Be aware there is often alot of broken glass at Cradle Rock.

Best idea is to go down there and explore the woods and trails a bit until
you are familiar with how to get from each area to the next...they are not
within sight of each other.

I bouldered there last summer, and encountered no problems. I saw no signs
indicating that access was restricted. I think you do have to be careful about
where you park, but otherwise, no problem. Check out Sherman's _Stone Crusade_
for more info. The friction of the rock there must be experienced to be
believed!
