Hi - I am considering a relocation from Eastern Sierra (Mammoth) to
Sandpoint/Spokane area this summer. Everything seems peachy except
what looks like a pretty serious (and perhaps showstopping) lack of
quality climbing nearby. Does anyone know where the closest good
climbing is? I read here about some route near Spokane that was
recently knocked over by some kids - please tell me that was not the
only route! The stuff I see so far is like CityOfRocks(~6 hrs)
Squamish(~7/8 hours) Canmore area(~6ish?). Is there any decent
climbing more in the "after-work" distance? If climbing is a
priority, is it just a crummy place to move to?

thanks in advance

chris

Schweitzer Rocks is in Sandpoint, apparently.

Laclede Rocks and Chimney Rock are nearby.

Skaha, BC.

Sawtooth Range.

Glacier Park for mountaineering.

The Rocks Of Sharon, Minnehaha, Metaline Falls, Marcus, Dishman Rocks,
Deep Creek, China Bend and Wild Walls Climbing Gym (!) are all Spokane
climbing areas.

C'mon man, this IS the West we're talking about here! You may have to
drive a bit, but there is stuff to climb. Still, compared to
Mammoth...

There has been a decent amount of development in the spokane area, mostly
steep limestone sport climbing. Marty Bland has written a guidebook for
the area (and done some of the development). See his website at:

Closer to Boise you have Table Rock, the Black Cliffs, Leslie Gulch (Tony
Yaniro manufactured routes), Swan Falls bouldering, Riggins (closer to
Sandpoint), City of Rocks, the Sawtooths, etc.

While we're at it, anybody know of any ice climbs close to the Boise area?

Thanks!

Ryan
