ELP! Should I buy a 25' Luhrs?

I am thinking about buying a 1973 25' Luhrs spec.'s are, Flybridge, I/B
rebuilt Chrysler 318 (I think) eng. Refinished in/out. Exc Cond.
the price is $3800.

The owner says he only used the boat 2 times in the last 3 yrs and the
boat never made it to water this year. it was winterized last year.

I told the owner that I MUST drive the boat before I buy.

There are NO electronics with this boat
I'll have to get the electronics, I figure it will cost me about $1000
for a VHF marine radio, CB, fish finder, and loran/GPS.

I want the boat for some fishing off the jersey shore for blues, tuna
fluke and some sharking, Plus for Family use.

Is this boat going to be too slow?
would it be possable to install a faster eng? like a larger diesels?

Anything I should look for or check?
example I know there are problems with Aquasport late 1980's models.

I am going to look at the boat today 9/17/97.

All comments welcome, even the jokes.

Thank you,

Lee:

Do not buy the boat without first making the purchase subject to an
inspection by a qualified marine surveyor. That boat is about 25-years-old,
and while the hull might be in decent shape, only an expert can tell you for
sure. You might be facing major repairs.

It is possible to install a diesel, though it won't be cheap. Yanmar makes
some small diesels that will fit in the place of that Detroit iron and
probably give you more speed and better performance all around. This is a
MAJOR refit item, though.

You're a little low on your electronics budget.

Only a bonifide marine surveyor can tell you what it's worth. However it certainly sounds like a good deal.

As for speed, a "SWAG" is 17 knots cruise. I urge you to invest in a survey BEFORE you buy.

Good luck,

TC

I know a guy at the marina who got a 1973 28' Luhrs. The boat was a
fantastic deal for him at $12,000. The hull is perfect except for the
gel coat gloss. The instrumentation and controls are all like new;
beautiful chrome bezel stuff. It has an 11' beam, flybridge and twin
318s (rebuilt). The cabin is really spacious and what a large fishing
area in the cockpit. The one your looking at could be a high quality
bargain but get it thoroughly surveyed including engine and a sea trial
is a must. I would be concerned with a single 318. It sounds
underpowered and of course single inboards can be difficult to manuver.
Repowering will be very expensive especially with diesel. I would lokk
into that cost and options before I buy. Also you electronics will be
more than $1,000, maybe $1500. for what you want.
