Negative campaign forces MAN to upgrade engines.
Florida - German engine manufacturer MAN, plans to upgrade many of its older
marine V-type engines sold in the United States. The company says the
"goodwill upgrade program" is in response to a negative campaign launched by
a disgruntled used boat buyer.
The company claims MEC serviced the buyer's damaged engine almost two years
ago and after the warranty had expired. However, the individual continued a
negative campaign. The Coast Guard was asked to conduct an investigation. It
closed the case, after finding nothing to substantiate alleged safety
problems.
MAN Engines & Components Inc. (MEC), Fort Lauderdale, FL, will install MAN's
latest pistons in all light-duty marine V-type engines built during the early
1990's. The company points out that this is not an recall and "is not being
implemented under any sense of urgency."
The program will be implemented only in the US. Owners, who have boats
equipped with these engines will soon be contacted by MEC representatives.
