Reset buttons on I/O?

This past weekend when we went to start up our 1995 Larson Hampton 220 5.8L
(Ford 351) Volvo Penta I/O there was nothing when I turned the key. A local
mechanic at the Marina came by and pushed a set of three reset buttons on the
engine. This did the trick and we were off for the day. While we were out,
the trim went out. When I got back to the dock I couldn't lift the outdrive
and the engine again was dead. Batteries fine. I pushed all the same reset
buttons and nothing. Keep checking things, fuses etc, pushing the reset
buttons for over an hour and then suddenly everything worked again. The engine
started and the outdrive was able to be raised and lowered. What happened?
I'm concerned it may happen again and I won't be lucky to be at a marina dock.
Any help greatly appreciated.

This may *not* be your problem, but last year I had the same problem
with my Mercruiser 350. The big, 50 amp circuit breaker on the engine
would trip, killing all power. Turns out one of my batteries had an
internal short. Replaced the bad battery and the breaker has not
tripped since. (knocking on wood).

The reset buttons are thermal breakers so they must cool before
resetting. There is an underlying problem causing this. It is one
of the following: wiring, bad electric motors, low batteries.
With bad wiring you are heating up the breakers from a short somewhere.
Check for loose connections at the big trailer like connectors that
are on the engine and under the dash. Take them apart and look for
broken and corroded posts. See if you batteries are getting a good
charge as low voltage translates into higher amp draw hence tripped
breakers. See if your electric motors are overdrawing from internal
damage. The way to tell is to attach a voltmeter to each appliance
and see what the voltage drop is when activated. With the starter
it should not reduce it below 10.5v with the trim I am not sure
and you should consult the mechanic.

Just a footnote here:
Sounds like the last thing you did before things went dark was operate
the tilt. I can't speak with authority here since my Volvo information is
not up to date. I would start my investigation with the tilt circuits.
particularly the tilt motor or hydraulic pump motor, whichever you have.

I had the same thing happen last year on my Fourwinns 235.

Try this first before you go crazy looking at all your motors.

It was only that the large wiring harness plug by the breaker buttons
was loose. Who ever installed the engine didn't use the hose clamp
meant to keep it in place.

Pull it out, spread the pin's apart and shove it in . Then wrap a SS
hoseclamp around it to hold it there.

Tighten the Battery terminals first.

The reset buttons are circuit breakers. Either you have an sporatic short
popping one or you have a weak breaker that is popping early.
