Red Sox hang in there

[Mr. Luddite]

What a game! The Red Sox trounced the
Yankees last night, keeping their
playoff hopes alive.

The Yankees? They get to go home until
next season.

The Red Sox/Yankees is arguably the greatest
rivalry in all of sports. Last time they
played for a one game, winner takes all
playoff spot, Bucky Dent killed the Red Sox
hopes. Paybacks is just wonderful!

Been fun following the Sox this year. Nobody
expected much of them but they surprised the
naysayers by being 8 games in first place earlier
in the season. After the All-Star break they
kinda fell apart due in large part to injuries
and Covid. It looked like the Yankees had
recovered and were leading the AL East but
the Sox kept scraping along leading to last
night's winner take all contest.

Rooting for the Red Sox all the way. Personally I can't stand the Yankees so whenever they are ousted from the playoffs is a good day here. Of course I do want the American League to win the series. Maybe I will continue to pull for the Sox.

Boston in general has had a bad couple of weeks playing Tampa teams
;-)

I can accept defeat to the Rays. They have been an excellent ball team
both last year and this year. The Sox have done well just to be in the
running.

As for the Bucks vs Patriots, the Bucks got lucky by an inch or two.
All in all, the Pats played a better game led by a rookie quarterback.

Can't believe Gronkowski. He got hit hard in the Rams game and went
out for x-rays. He then returned to the game and continued to play.
Turns out, the x-rays didn't immediately show that he had four fractured
ribs, one broken rib and a punctured lung. Tough dude.

Yes, the Bucks sure are lucky to have Brady and the defense does
a pretty good job protecting their investment. How many sacks did

Brady didn't have any receivers at all last Sunday. Even he was
shaking his head at some of the passes they missed. I really don't pay
much attention to football but all the hype had my wife watching. It
was pretty sad when that guy was hit in the back of the head by a pass
he should have caught. There were several other where the receiver
seemed surprised at where the ball was. These guys were just not
running their routes and being where they were supposed to be. I am
guessing they hadn't practiced with Brady enough to understand the
rhythm.. I bet they are working on that a lot right now.
I agree for a rookie, the other guy was playing very well.

Ok. Now, back to baseball:

Red Sox turned it on last night. Scored two runs in the bottom
of the first inning but the Rays responded with 5 runs in the
bottom of the first. The Rays were hitting Boston's star pitcher
Chris Sales badly and he got yanked.

Game went on to the fifth and it looked like it was heading for
another win by the Rays but then the Sox came alive.

Final score: Red Sox 14. Tampa Bay 6.

A lot of offense with hot bats.

One thing about baseball today that bugs me though.
The pitching staff is recruited based on ERA averages,
number of different pitches, fast ball speed and
number of K's during high school, college or minor
league play.

This results in almost every MLB pitcher trying to
win games unilaterally by strike out. They tend to
try to dazzle the hitters, forgetting that there are
8 other players on the field playing defense.

I think they should not worry so much about the "perfect"
strike-out pitch and concentrate more on throwing pitches
that are more likely than not to be grounders or pop ups
and let the rest of the team do their jobs.

The guy who goes for strikeouts, is going to be short lived career wise.
Look at a pitcher who throws balls the are hit as pop ups, or grounders.
He does not throw 25 pitches an inning. Going way back, I went to the same
high school and Ernie Broglio. He threw knuckle balls predominately. I
tried to hit him once when he was near the end of his career. That ball
never went more than 3” in the same direction. He had a long career, as
he did not wear out his arm.

Nolan Ryan is the exception to that. He played for 27 seasons and set all-time records for no-hitters (seven) and strikeouts (5,714). We saw him pitch several times when he was with the Mets in New York. You could hear his fast ball hit the catcher's mitt from hundreds of feet away.

Very true about the pitch count and short careers. Many pitchers injure
their elbows trying to stop a pitch at the last minute when the umpire
suddenly calls time out due to the batter stepping out of the batter's box.

I get a kick out of watching games today. They have installed wireless
microphones in home plate and all the bases. Not every network enables
these microphones for broadcast during the games but occasionally they
will have it on to eavesdrop on "conversations" between opposing
players. They have to be careful because sometimes the players forget
they can be heard.

He's one of the "old school" pitchers noted for two pitches ... a 100
mph+ fastball and a curve ball that was also very high velocity.

If he were starting out today as a
rookie he might have a hard time being drafted because he only had those
two pitches in his arsenal. Clubs today are looking for pitchers who
have mastered "4 seam fastballs", "2 seam fastballs", curves, sliders,
cutters, splitters, sinkers, knuckleballs to name just a few.

I had a friend who's son was drafted by the Seattle Mariners. He
played for a couple of years in their minor league affiliate and was
then called up to the Mariners. Played for about half a season and was
released. He just didn't have the variety of pitches they wanted.

That's because the Atlanta Braves have Red Sox DNA. Originally the Red
Sox were the "Boston Braves" (starting in 1871). They were in the
National Baseball Association which became the National League.

The American League Red Sox franchise started in 1901 and many players
from the Braves moved to the Red Sox because the team was better
financed and could pay players more.

The National League Braves lost fan attendance and interest so the
owner of the Braves moved the team to Milwaukee in 1953. In 1966
the team moved to Atlanta.

The history of baseball teams and franchises is confusing.
There was a team called the "Cincinnati Red Stockings" and
Boston's AL team became the "Boston Red Stockings". They were
also called the "Boston Americans".

Growing up in the south, I remember going to Braves games and seeing
Chief "Knock-a-Homer" come out of his teepee and doing the dance
when a homer was hit. A different time.

My mom worked as an electronic assembler for a guy that started his
company in his basement. The same guy that I worked for and retired
from a little while back.

Anyway, she was a huge Braves fan. When she finally retired he bought her
and my dad Delta seats to Atlanta, put them up in a hotel, gave them seats
to a Braves game along with limo service for the trip. She was more than excited.
