I just bought a used Honda outboard motor. It didn't come with an owner's
manual. Does anyone know what oil Honda reccomends? has anyone had any luck
with synthetics?

Thanks

I just bought a used Honda outboard without manual, too; the local dealer
hit me for $20 for a @!^#%!~@^# copy.

Anyway, the oil recommendation is:

Engine: API Standard (SG, SH) SAE 10W-30
Gear case: API Standard GL-4/5 SAE 90 outboard motor gear oil (Quicksilver
Gear Lube, Quicksilver Super Duty Lower Unit Lubricant, or equivalent)

Capacities (for the 75 and 90 HP models) are: Engine, 4.2 US quarts without
filter change, 4.8 US quarts with filter change;
Gear case, 1 liter (33.8 fl. oz.)

They recommend an engine oil change every 100 hours or 6 months after the
initial 20 hours (which your engine is presumably beyond). Gear oil is
supposed to be changed every 200 hours or 6 months.

Good luck -- I've had my Honda 90 for a little over two months and it hasn't
missed a beat -- the only small glitch has been that on two occasions, the
neutral lockout switch hasn't quite engaged. I've had to wiggle the control
lever back and forth in order to get the engine to crank.

I have a 130 and have the shop manual. Any good quality oil as mentioned
above. 10W-40 can also be used and is preferred if you see triple digit
temperatures. The local Honda dealer uses Castrol in the bulk tanks for
services. They also recommend the Quicksilver Synthetic over Hondas own
90W due to the fact it still provides good lubrication even if diluted
up to 70% water.

The 130 calls for over 6 in the book but mine usually takes 5 w/o filter.

I had the same problem with the neutral interlock. The manual calls for
cable adjustments as part of normal preventive maintenance. After I
checked the cables, I had a look at the neutral switch. It was mounted
to a steel plate that was designed to be bent one way or the other. One
little tweak with a crescent wrench to grip the plate, and problem solved.
Perhaps yours will be as easy.
