Funny how much we look forward to receiving it. Got mine (Canada) on Tuesday

I've also read stories about Defender not having product in stock, promising
to have it available for shipment by a certain date, and then ultimately not
meeting the promised shipping date. I won't say that West never botched an
order of mine, but when it has happened they bent over backwards to fix it
and compensated by shipping the replacement overnight and offering account
credits toward future purchases. Plus, I find thumbing through a 500+ page
full color catalog (that they automatically mail me at their expense) much
more convenient than navigating through an on-line catalog. If I'm in a
real hurry, I can find the item in the catalog, call the store here in town
to see if they've got it in stock, and drive down and pick it up if they do.
They've earned my business through superior service, and I would expect them
to be within 5-10% of of anybody else's price on a given item, hardly enough
differential to warrant cutting them off at the knees after they've proven
time and time again that they are a valued resource to me. Value comes in
many other forms than price alone.

hmm... I think you just explained the *real* reason behind high
laptop sales.

I just filled in the catalog request form on their web page and they
sent one to me. I haven't ordered from them yet but will probably order
a wheel autopilot from them. On that item, they are around 8% cheaper
then West Marine, 14% when you add in the sales tax.

I think West matches prices. You could probably bring in the price to
your local West store and pick up the item at the lower price. It may
work out to your benefit, depending on shipping costs. If it is close
to a wash, I'd buy local.

Defender does seem to have the best prices. I've used them several times
without a problem. I once ordered an item from them that had a model
upgrade a few weeks after my order. They took the item back and shipped
the new model. No restocking charge and *they* paid shipping for the
replacement. I've heard others have had some problems but I think
they're first rate in customer support.
That said, the West Marine catalog is a far better source for good
boating information and advice than our resident self-proclaimed boating
expert. For that reason alone, they are worth supporting.

There's a West Marine store about a mile down the road from my marina.
When I need the little here and there odd and end, they have my support.
I would too, especially because it's easier to take it back if there's a
problem. But we're talking about a pretty significant difference in
price here. I'm not sure about the WM price match policy, but doesn't
it have to be a local store and not a mail order catalog for a local WM
store to match it? I can probably get the same price as the Defender
catalog from the WM catalog, but then I'd have to pay shipping *and*
sales tax because WM has a local presence.
Plus, if I buy at the local WM store, I have to pay an additional point
above the state sales tax just for the priveledge of shopping in
Philadelphia. Ok, for this item, the additional point will only cost me
$10. But I avoid that just on principle alone if I can. Maybe I'll go
down to Delaware and buy it.
It's worth checking out, IMO.
I buy the expensive stuff from West or Boat/US. They have stores in my
area, and each store has at least one guy who knows his stuff,
electronics wise. And both stores have a liberal return policy.
By far, the best supply store I've encountered has been the West store
in Jax, on Roosevelt Boulevard. There was hardly any employee turnover,
they knew their stuff, they could recommend quality tradespeople and so
forth.

Call your local WM store and ask for the manager. Tell him you're a ready
buyer for this specific product and have a verifiable advertised price on it
from another vendor. I'd be surprised if he wasn't eager to capture the
business. If so, you get the product at the discounted price and you've
contributed to your local economy at both the retail and governmental level.
In addition, it's one more stroke for for the local store to be able to
justify its existence to corporate headquarters, further insuring that it
will be there next time you need that little something in a hurry.

this suprises you really? Even liberals don't give away their own
money.
What suprises me (well not really) is the stupidity of having a higher
sales tax in a city where businesses are fleeing to the suburbs already.
Even more surprising (well not really:) is that liberals are the ones
who passed the higher sales tax for Philadelphia. I thought liberals
were supposed to be against flat taxes like a sales tax because they
claim it's regressive. Well, anything to line their pockets I guess.
Their duplicity is audacious.
And very importantly, they have a no-bull guarantee. Don't like it
bring it back. I pinched a fender and it was leaking a little. I'd
had it couple of years and went in to buy a new one. They reminded me
that fender had a forever warantee.

What did you find in the catalog that's new this year and you think is
really cool. I'll start it off with:
- Garmin GPSMAP 162.
- Standard Horizon Spectrum VHF
- Ancor Dielectric Grease (it's real hard to find till now).
- Even more stainless steel tools. You can now pretty well fill your
boat's tool box with SS.

You can lead me to the water, but not away from it.
Now there's an interesting merger possibility. Imagine page after page V.S.
models posing with and demonstrating the use of the latest in boating
gadgets and doodads. Could a catalog get any better than that?
