As I continue working on the restoration of an old one-design, I've been
removing old galvanized and brass hardware with the hopes of replacing
these items with their stainless steel equivalents.

Anyone know of local, on-line, or mail-order sources of small quantities
of very specific clevis and spring pins, washers, wingnuts, machine
screws, etc.? I'm in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Thanks again to all who have responded in the past to my naive questions!

My local Lowe's hardware store (NC) has an _UNBELEIVABLE_ (for a
Lowe's) selection of SS screws, clevis pins, washers, wingnuts, etc.

They are a MUCH lower price than West Marine, etc.

Ray.

Jamestown Supply in Rhode Island. Primarily mail order. If you
order by the box (50-100, depending on size or cost), prices are
good. 20% surcharge for non-full box. Shipping prices are cost of
shipping - no handling. Fast, reliable. Lots of odd things in
several different metals. Email me for the phone number - I don't
have it here. The only place I know of to get stainless tee nuts
in bulk!

Anyone is cheaper than West for stainless hardware. I don't know where you
live but here in the S.F. Bay there is a place called Olander's that'll sell
you any quantity of a staggering assortment of stuff stainless or otherwise.
Your area should have such a place too.

You need to be careful about using SS that you don't know for sure
is Marine quality.

I've heard several people talk about using SS from Orchard Supply, and
having the item corrode in a few weeks, just from the salt air.

An important point is to make sure whatever you get is type 316
stainless -- there are other alloys that _do_ rust in salt water,
especially several from Taiwan, where quality control is an issue.

The standard mail-order distributors (Jamestown for choice) usually
have the right stuff, but you can't count on retailers like West or
others.

Email me if you have specific questions or needs.
