I have decided to go with a four stroke. But, can't decide on the
brand. Which one is the better one? Any opinions are appreciated.
Thanks
Rocky

I own a Honda BF130 and I faced the same issue. As far as there being such
thing as a better "Brand," frankly that is a kind of silly question. It
really depends on your needs. When I purchased a new boat, I switched from a
Yamaha 115 two-stroke to a Honda 130 four-stroke. The Horsepower was the
key. Yamaha makes excellent motors. I had no complaints with my Yamaha, I
just needed the additional horsepower. The Honda is a heavy motor however,
and if 115 hp would have worked on the new boat, a Yamaha would be on it
right now. If you are looking at the more powerful motors, I would simply
compare weight, price, local dealer service, and factors that actually
affect you. Both manufacturers make a fine product.

Honda. Every crabber setting traps in front of my house either HAS a
Honda he runs to death all day or is dreaming of when he'll be rich
enough to buy a Honda so he can run it to death all day.

There's Hondas on those crab boats that look as if they'd been to sea
for 20 years, completely trashed. I can see they're still running
while he's swapping traps. The water pisser is squirting,
appropriately. Of course, I can't actually HEAR it running because
he's 200' away.....until he switches from his dead idle position one
to his wide open throttle position two. Crabbers only use two
throttle settings, neither of which are good for engines.....

Of course, I'm biased. My lawn mower - Honda. My 5.5KW generator -
Honda. My 1KW electronic inverter generator - Honda. All just
perfect. All crank on 1st pull, even after sitting for years. My
cars - Mercedes Diesels. You gotta draw the line, somewhere!

Wish I could have one of those Honda 4-cyl TURBOcharged
jetskis.....(d^:) Wish my Sea Rayder jetboat was a HONDA.

Hi Rocky,

I like Yamaha the best but Honda is very good too.

I have checked with many outboard mechanics that service both brands plus
others and many like Yamaha best.

I would go by weight when choosing a 4 stroke outboard motor. These are some
popular motors by weight.

2hp = 27# Honda (top tank)

4hp = 48# Yamaha (top tank)

8hp = 83# Yamaha

9.9hp & 15hp both weigh about 100#

25hp = 135# Yamaha

30hp = 150# Honda

50hp = 200# Honda

60hp = 250# Yamaha

everything between 60 and 115hp is pretty heavy.

115hp FI = 410# Yamaha

220/225hp are both good.

Honda has a great reputation.

Their ATVs are very popular at Alaskan Lodges.

Their car and motor cycles at tops too.

Honda generators and lawn mowers are lusted after.

Jet skis and outboards are hot too.

A couple of points commonly overlooked. Of course, some of this may be moot
depending on what size you are looking for.
Try and get fuel injection. I think Yamaha's offer fuel injection at a lower
hp range.
If I recall, Yamaha's have smaller block's for their hp output. Usually
means they're lighter but may indicate the engine works harder and is
subject to greater stresess. Although, the same could be said for Honda
automobile engines and we all know longevitey is not one of their
shortcomings.
Doesn't Honda have a three year warrenty vs. two pn the Yammy?

Thanks, for the input everyone. I believe I am going with the Honda
130. It's for a 20 ft. hurricane deck boat, tat has a 150 hp. max.
Neither yamaha or honda make a 150 4 stroke. I hope this is the best
decision

What kind of speed are you hoping for?

Is this the Godfrey-Hurricane 201 FD? Honda's own website has
some performance data for the 130 on this model. Its doesn't look
very good IMO. Top speed seems to be 37-38MPH with a 5+
second plane time and they had to go with a 15 pitch prop due to
the weight. That means if you load it up some or plan to do anything
ambitious (skiing, tubing, etc) you are going to be disappointed.

Check it out at www.honda-marine.com and click on Boat
Applications.

I have the same motor on a fairly heavy 18' deep-V boat, but I
only fish with it. I am turning a 13 X 16 stainless Typhoon and
she'll do a tad over 40mph at WOT. But dragging some lard-ass
on a set of ski's would out of the question...

So what do you intend to do with this boat?

Rocky, don't do it. A 130 is going to be a dog on that boat in terms of
performance. A deck boat is designed to carry lots of people and stuff.
You need the max hp for the boat to perform to the point that you can ski or
do anything other than ride like a pontoon. Plus resale will be very poor
if you can even find someone to cosider it w/ the 130.

Go for the 150 EFI Yamaha or Merc and you will be so much happier w/ the
boat. Plus the price should be about the same.

9.9 hp = Honda 89#
15 hp = Honda 93#

For 2002, neither Honda nor Yamaha share powerheads on the 9.9 and 15
fourstroke, hence the weight differences.

Award for heavy fourstroke 9.9 goes to Mercury and Nissan/Tohatsu,
114# (yowtch!) with Tohatsu lower unit, 111# with Merc LU. They come
in 15 hp flavors as well, and Tohatsu has an 18 using the same
powerhead. Interesting is a possible cross-pollenization between
Yamaha and Tohatsu inferred from the similar bore and stroke on their
15's. Also, I may recall a discrepancy between the website and printed
specs for the Merc 9.9 whose powerhead may be based on the Yamaha 9.9
and not the Tohatsu 18/15/9.9, though the exterior is substantially
Tohatsu. For a year or two, Tohatsu was using Merc's lower unit on
their 9.9/15 fourstroke.
