Striper fishing at New Hogan Lake (Central Ca foothills) May 7: I tried

trolling. The morning was cool and cloudy, the afternoon was bright
and breezy. The stripers had lockjaw.
I trolled rolling anchovies at 20' and 30' for over five hours for
absolutely zilch - not even a bump. I even trolled up the narrows
thinking maybe they were upriver looking for love. But once through
the narrows I didn't mark a singe fish.
I marked several at around 20' to 25' in the middle of the main lake.
The few I did mark were widely scattered.
Hogan is a mystery; all I know is that the hotter the weather is the
better the fishing is. Usually. Maybe. Well... maybe not! Heck - I
can't figure that place out! Roll Eyes

Stripers to me are just one step above a carp. They ruined the Lake Mead
fishery, and the Colorado River downstream. Stripers............ yuck.
Tell me. Was there largemouth bass and crappie fishing BEFORE the stripers?
And how was that?

They still fish for black bass, not sure about lg mouth. I've read
that there is good crappie fishing there, but don't fish for them so
not certain.
We've just had a big brouhaha in Calif about continuing protection of
stripers in the California Delta where they are probably the #1 game
fish. Some enviro-whacko purists wanted protection done away with
because the stripers were introduced back in 1879 - not native. After
a good showing by striper anglers, the state backed down and the
limits still apply. Well, in California where we have almost no
enforcement of our wildlife laws, there really are no limits and no
wildlife laws if one chooses not to comply. There is an incredible
amount of poaching in this state - especially abalone and sturgeon.
But we'll send your kid to college for free!!

You must be a lonely anti-striper guy; stripers are one of the most
prized game fish in the country. They're fished for in both Atlantic
and Pacific, most estuaries and hundreds of rivers and lakes. Hundreds
- if not thousands - of guides make millions of dollars taking people
striper fishing. Stripers make up a major part of the sport fishing
industry. Too bad you're missing out on all the fun!

In these parts, we have excellent striper fishing, and being kind of
in a transition area, we can fish for cold water species and warm
water species all in the same lakes! In Lanier, you can catch trout,
sauger, walleye small mouth bass etc. for cold water then warm water
species like spotted bass (HUGE, they say the next record will come
out of Lanier), largemouth, crappie, etc. Then the stripers, hybrid
bass, white bass.

Apparently you have problems comprehending the difference between salt and
fresh water. My comments are that IMNSHO that wherever stripers have been
introduced, they have become the dominant fish, and the other species have
become only prey to them, including those raised at taxpayer expense in
hatcheries and turned loose for stripers to prey on, like in the Colorado
River system between Hoover and Davis dams. The damn econazis have a
problem with every new species being introduced, yet they signed off on this
one. I'd rather have a root canal than go striper fishing. YMMV, and
probably does. I like to go to small lakes and streams, and fish for fish
that have been living there centuries under the same conditions. Not some
artificially created pond to house what some fisherman thinks everyone else
should fish for. And stripers only taste one peg above a carp, too. Guides
make millions taking people striper fishing? To me, that's equivalent to
the pulmanilla drivers in Mazatlan that will take you to a Mexican whore
house. A way for fat lazy old men to be taken to something they could have
found themselves if they weren't so fat and lazy.

And you're right: Fat, lazy old men like to be taken fishing and/or to
the local whore house, whatever their pleasure may be. Those are
popular pastimes and fishing guides and taxi drivers make money from
those old farts who want their pleasures served up for them.Studs and
way cool purists, many likely much the same as you, also pay for the
same pleasures. The point is this: They are popular pursuits! It
doesn't require your approval to be popular and none of us old, lazy
farts or cool young dudes give a rat's ass that you don't approve.
I suggest that you toss a handmade fly into a pristine stream
somewhere - and real soon! Gosh darn, it seems you really need to get
out and get some fresh air!

And then have the limo driver stop by the whore house on the way home.
Ahhhhhhhh. A perfect day compared to a little stream fishing, or crappie
fishing.
And sorry, I use storebought baits, and don't know any "pristine" streams.
