I am looking to purchase a used inboard aluminum jet boat. Most I have
seen for sale have a ford 350 V8. How many hours of use do typical
engine and jet drive go before a rebuild is needed. Also what should I
look for i.e. engine compression, etc.

thanks

I have over 800 hrs on my 1991 Jetcraft. Did a valve job on the boat this
year. Had to pull the head because of a rusted in spark plug, so just did
the valve job also. Was running good. The pump is almost a no maintance
item. I assume it's a Kodiak 3 stage. The items that can be changed are
the seals, cutlass bearings, input bearing. The seals last forever if not
run dry, if dry about 5 minutes. The cutlass bearings last a couple of
years if not run dry, if dry about 3 minutes ($60 for the set of bearings
and sleeves). The input thrust bearing ($90), changed mine but was not
the problem, was the U-joint in the coupling. The impeller may have to
have the tips sharpened, from too many rock dings, but don't have to be
replaced. The pump is an easy do it yourself item to work on.

average lifetime hours of a marine engine is 700 hours, have seen engines with
2000 hours still operating, depending on maintenance and usage(saltwater). the
jet pump, I assume either a hamilton or a kodiak will depend on how much
gravel the previous owner ran thru the pump, a pretty good indication can be
had if you crawl under the boat with a flashlight and look thru the intake
grate, looked for dinged impeller leading edges and liner grooving. the highest
reading should be within 15 % of the lowest reading for an engine in good
shape. slightly more difference in an engine with lots of hours, say no more
than 20-25%.
