I honestly don't know why it happened. I think it's an unfortunate
confluence of science and politics - policy rather than procedure.

From what I know about Dr. Mann, he has always been a bit of a
eco-warrior and got carried away. He attracted the attention of Al
Gore who sensed an opportunity and like the snake oil salesman he's
always been, took advantage of it. And it snowballed from there -
grants were given, studies to be made, reputations to be protected,
taxes/revenue to be raised and applied, social engineering to be
accomplished for the protection of the masses.

I'm not saying that pollution isn't an issue, that eco systems don't
need to be protected, fish stocks replenished, research done on
non-fossil fuel energy delivery, etc. These are important issues, but
they've been lost in the great Global Warming Wars which, as it is
turning out, is a bogus crisis.

Hopefully we can start doing real research and science once this blows
over.

Mann and Jones behavior in all of this has been really sleazy. Just
about any real scientist (even us commercial scientists) welcome
criticism of our work because then we can make it better. We try to
keep away from personal attacks and realize that sometimes our critics
are simply correct. Yeah, we all have egos but if you try to cover up
questionable stuff, it just spirals out of control and you really end
up looking foolish. Yes, I sometimes think my professional critics
are being jerks but you have to keep up the pretense of civility,
otherwise you end up looking stupid.
You NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put things into e-mail that you would be
ashamed to be published. You do not say such things on the phone
either. Save it for times when you can be absolutely sure you are
alone with someone else and even then be professional about it,
otherwise it'll come back to bite you. Sometimes I hear my employees
say nasty things about some company that has done us wrong and I tell
em to watch what they say.
There are people who have really done me wrong but whenever I see them
at conferences, I always greet them in a friendly manner (but watch
what I say to them) because this impresses people. When I hear
something bad has happed to them, I make sure I make it known they
have my best wishes although in reality I may wish for em to die. It
is just good PR.
I am almost astonished at the foolishness of these guys in the e-
mails. It is either a case of arrogantly thinking they are immune to
blowback or simple foolishness to such an extent that I would doubt
their judgement on anything.

How do you jibe this, with your following statement? I mean, how do you

Isn't that exactly what is happening right now, albeit more publicly than
is normal for most science? The process is, by nature, ugly, but science
*is* doing it's job.

For those flat earthers, those that think these emails are some sort of
smoking gun, you may want to consider:

"More interesting is what is not contained in the emails. There is no
evidence of any worldwide conspiracy, no mention of George Soros
nefariously funding climate research, no grand plan to ‘get rid of the
MWP’, no admission that global warming is a hoax, no evidence of the
falsifying of data, and no ‘marching orders’ from our socialist/communist/
vegetarian overlords. The truly paranoid will put this down to the
hackers also being in on the plot though."

“Because of the volume of this information we cannot currently confirm
that all of this material is genuine.”

There was 160 MB of data stolen. Obviously, it would take some time to
confirm if it was authentic. Obviously, someone who was willing to break
the law (hacking), and post private information publicly, *might* not be
above changing the data, if they have an agenda.

You don't think they have an agenda, do you?

Oh please - here's the "directorship" of RealClimate.

http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/category/extras/contributor-bios/

Notice a prominent name there? And Schmidt isn't exaclty an objective
observer - he's participated in this data fraud and is a prominent
eco-warrior.

I don't know a lot about Dr. Ammann but I noticed a couple of
interesting things in his CV - most notably this: IPCC AR4 Reviewer
Synthesis Report, Chapter 9 and contributing author.

Think they might have something to protect here?

Do you realize how simple it is to compare 160 MB worth of data? That is
not even two hours of work. The "University" could verify it but they
won't.

> You don't think they have an agenda, do you?

Everybody has an agenda. The sooner you understand this the sooner you
will cast a suspicious eye at both sides of an issue.

Debunks the science? How about the Antic Hole. How about the evidence to
the contrary. How about debating your detractors in public. If you are
so damn cocksure of your data and your "science" then it should stand up
the the scrutiny of the sunshine. Put the data into the public domain,
put the "models" into the public domain.

Surely the scene supporting global warming will stand on its own. Unless
the legs upon which it has to stand are balsa wood tooth picks.

What real science? ;) ;) I am of the school of thought that looks at
a commercial for instance where trick photography or tricky editing
makes a product look good. If they have to trick you to make it look
good I tend to dismiss the product completely. For instance, there is
that annoying guy with the over priced orange towels. He has a part in
the commercial where he pours soda on a piece of carpet then cleans it
all up by pressing the towel into the carpet. If you watch carefully you
see that the clip is cut and a drier carpet is substituted... I won't
buy his towels knowing he is selling snake oil...

Your attempt to minimalize the information brought into the public
domain by stating that it can't be a world-wide conspiracy because
George Soros isn't involved is a nice try at deflection.

What we have is a collection of "scientists" from around the world who
saw global warming as a way to fatten their research budgets, bring them
national and international prominence and pad their CV's. The part that
is really nefarious is that they are trying with every "trick" they know
to beat their critics into submission by calling the global warming
deniers at the least and idiots at the most.

Keep pushing the it can't be a conspiracy because George Soros isn't
behind it line of crap if you want.

You gotta love it when Toskie comments on that which is beyond his
capability of understanding, and that would would science, math,
history, politics, sociology, childrearing and building of boats capable
of being launched into Long Island Sound.

The "over-priced orange towels..."commercial...

Yes, that's something worth pondering and analyzing.

The problem is that in most OT discussions in this group you are in way
over your head. I suspect you have tried to sail a full sized cardboard
boat. Lucky for you the mooring line was still attached to the dock cleat.

I also suspect you have tried it more than once.
