Two questions

[Asylum]

I have an 84 VIP ski boat with a 305 motor. I'm in Texas and wondered about
insurance. Is it required? I know I could call and find out, but thought
I'd throw it out here.

My other question is about painting my boat. My boat is fiberglass and is
an 84. It sure could use some paint to make it look pretty. Can someone
give advice on painting a boat?

I don't think insurance is required in Texas unless you have a loan and
the lender requires it. I'm in Texas and have always HAD insurance, but
never heard of a requirement for it.

I dont know anything about painting a boat, but the insurance question is
simple to answer.
even if there is no law saying you have to haveit, you should haveit.
Think of it like this, if you do a stump jump you will have to pay for the
damage to your outdrive (some where in the neighborhood of $1500-3000). If
you dont have insurance, you get to eat the cost. With insurance they eat
the cost and you just pay a deductible.
Also if someone gets hurt while on your boat. You once again get to eat the
cost. With insurance someone else eats the cost. Good luck

Fiberglass is a vey good base for paint like enamel or lacquer when properly
prepared, And it will last on the freeboard, but I do not know how well it
will perform at and below the water level. Blistering and peeling, I would
suspect, unless you only go trolling speeds (kind of tough to ski at 2
knots).

But does it really need to be painted? Or is the gel coat just faded and/or
oxidized? It might just need a good buffing. I like the 3M products that
combine rubbing compound and wax. They can really bring a dull finish back
to life.

Yes, I guess it is just dull. I tried a rubbing compound and then a
finishing glaze last year with a buffer. It really didn't do much. Also, I
the top part is a purple metallic looking stuff, which needs some life back
in it. I tried buffing that too, no luck.
