Is a MAXUM just a fancy BAYLINER.

I understand they are made in the same plant or at least by the same
company, but there sure seems to be a difference in fit and finish.
Is the Bayliner the Chevy and Maxum the Buick ? Anyone have an opinion
on a 20' 1994 Maxum cuddy with a 3.0L Mercruiser, it seems like it would
be good for what I am looking for.

Just because they're owned by some distant parent company doesn't mean
they're the same boat. For example, U.S. Marine "owns" not only Bayliner,
but also Maxxum and Robalo. Robalo's about as far from a Bayliner as you
can get, like comparing a Cessna 150 to an F15. Most of these "same
company" arrangements are just numbers on an accountant's ledger, it has
nothing to do with the products themselves.

Bayliner and Maxum have in common. Durint the early years, Maxum
"borrowed" designs from Bayliner so both boats tended to look the same
but they have seperated and gone their own way.

I just purchased a 1997 2800SCR Maxum and did detailed comparisions
with the 28 foot Bayliners. There is NO comparission. The Maxum
wins in all catagories.

Maxums are pure junk in every sense of the word. They require warranty
work almost upon delivery. Misaligned windshields are common. How about
fuel tanks that leak because they have been punctured by staples through
the deck.
In Spring '95, we delivered 5 23 Maxums. Each one required MAJOR warranty
work within six weeks. One vessel exhibited structural defects so
extensive that one of the top FBG repair men in the area refused to touch
it.
Fit & finish. Nothing fits! You will find entire bulheads misalighned. As
mentioned windshields are commonly misaligned.
Leaks? Let's not even go there.
These boats are junk! We stopped selling them after two seasons. The
alternative was to hire more men to handle the warranty work.

My 2800SCR is a work of art! Everything fits perfectly! There are no
leaks and the boat is just perfect. It was purchased after a long
time shopping for Larsons, Bayliners and Cruisers Inc. Perhaps
Maxum cleaned up its act in 1996/97?

Same as the bottom line. Are you telling us that the bottom line has
nothing to do with the product?

I have a new Maxum and it is a great boat. No leaks or any other problems
you stated. As a matter of fact I am trading up to a larger Maxum next week.

Owned by the same parent company true, but not out of the same factory.
Maxums are manufactured out of the Washington plant only, Bayliners come
out of about 3 plants across the country. Brunswick Marine is the
parent company who also owns Robola, SeaRay and I am sure a couple of
other boat names as well. All have a 5 year hull warranty etc etc etc.

I would not buy the 20 with a 3.0L, I looked at that boat and I would
not put anything smaller than the 4.3L in it. I wound up buying a 96
Maxum 19 with the 4.3L. More bells and whistles, which when it comes
down to it, thats what you are really paying for! Excellent boat.
