Anyone have any experience with this? I have a nice leather couch I am
thinking about putting in the main saloon on my trawler, but I don't
know how it will react in the marine environment.

Sceptre Yachts ( http://www.sceptreyachts.com/ ) does interiors in
leather. Maybe you could ask them, or find someone that has one...

We are just getting ready to do some leather upolstery on our
boat. My S.O. has been in the marine canvas/upolstery business
for 25 years so I suspect she feels it will be OK. She bought
1 1/2 cows worth of leather a few weeks ago. Interesting that
it was about the same price as a good fabric upolstery material.

Just because it is on a boat wouldn't be that much of an issue. I
suspect the real issue would be if the couch is likely to be sat on by
people wearing wet bathing suits.

We experimented with some cotton fabric on our last boat. Figured
if we gave it a good spraying with Scotchguard it would be OK.
We left the Baltimore area in the pouring rain, spent a day in the
Bohemia River also in the rain then headed up through the C&D
canal still in the rain. Halfway through the canal I happened to
go below to warm up. Mildew all over the cushions. Learned
that lesson the hard way. Don't use cotton fabric on boats.

And leather is less prone to mildew? Well, okay, I guess it'll hold up longer
than a couple of days of rain ;-)

I love our leather couches at home and would be willing to try my hand at
leather work for the boat, but wonder how it would hold up to wet suits and
high humidity. And how comfortable would it be in the bunks?

Getting back to the original poster: I would try it out, since it's a couch
you can take back home if it doesn't work out well.

A former boss of mine runs a fishing charter business in St. Martin's.
On their website I've seen a leather couch or loveseat in the lounge
area on the Lund motor boat. Probably ok down there, but I wouldn't use
it in a cold damp climate like mine. I would be concerned about mold
over the winter.

Do water buffalo suffer from mold and mildew?

Live ones don't. However, they're kind of hard to sit on in the saloon
and they eat.

She doesn't seem to think it will be a problem. Wets suits won't be a
problem since we would be wearing them in that part of the boat that
has leather. Not planning on doing the bunks in leather. I suspect that
normal care offered to any leather would be enough to keep it in good
shape.

You can get it from Boat Leather too. I use it for the wheels and
corners of sails. Not sure how good it would be for upolstery
though. Mighty expensive I would think.
