Currently I have BoatUS insurance on my new 24' center console(ob). It's
convient but they retrict me to the eastern seaboard ( coastal waters). I
wanted to trailer it to Miami and run over to Bimini. Without calling them,
does anybody know what they will say? Is West Marine's insurance better? I
hear West Marine's insurance is cheaper. Do they offer towing like
TowBoatUS? Is there towing in Bimini?

Call them and most likely you can buy a rider to allow you to make your trip
to Bimini.

One way of controlling the cost of an insurance policy is to restrict the area
in which a vessel can be operated.

The insurance companies apparently believe that a boat operated in familiar
local waters is less likely to be in peril and that their risk is less than if
they said, "OK, with this insurance you can take the boat anyplace on the
planet."

Your policy limitation of the "Eastern Seaboard" allows a pretty broad cruising
range without buying riders. Common in the NW are policies that restrict
vessels to
points within the western entrance to the SOJDF and south of Niggei Island (a
spot at the northern tip of Vancouver Island.

Out policies don't usually cover the W coast of Vancouver Island or making an
off shore run of any type, and a rider has to e purchased.

Your experience is common and would most likely be the same with another
carrier.

I think Boat US as the best insurance, they will guarantee their rates for 3
years. West marine low balls you the first year and raises rates about 20%
with out any claims or changes
